We suspect Mobil 1 would like us to say that the most important thing in its “Smoke is the Bandit” YouTube video series is, well, the company’s motor oil. But really, the advertising subtext for this play off Smokey and the Bandit is secondary to the real stars: The fake, Burt Reynolds–emulating mustache and sideburns NASCAR driver Tony “Smoke” Stewart wears, and the classic Pontiac Trans Am Stewart drives.
So far, Mobil 1 has put out just the first Smoke is the Bandit video, but more are coming that will follow Stewart as he makes a moonshiner-style run to pick up 400 bottles of motor oil. The first installment is reasonably funny, and Mobil 1′s blunt ad work-in is appreciated for its brevity. But really, what we’ll be looking for here is way, way more Trans Am awesometude.
