“We were quickest car on track until I started barrel rolling.”
Conor Daly talking to rescue personnel after exiting his car
So close, yet so far away. American Formula One hopeful Conor Daly was on a run that would have secured him fast lap of the day at this morning’s GP2 test at the Yas Marina circuit in Abu Dhabi when, according to Conor, the off-pace car of Facu Regalia moved onto the racing line in a fast, blind corner. This was an understandable surprise to Conor, and the ensuing collision sent Daly barrel-rolling into the barriers.
He’s a little upset:
Unfortunate lack of respect on track led to a big incident. I was on a lap with purple 1st sector green 2nd sector and another car came out-

Of the pits going slow on line in most blind and quick section of the track, last sector in front of hotel an I could not miss him.

Obviously adding insult to a fortunate lack of injury is the fact that Daly had just set a purple time (fastest) in sector 1, had a fast sector 2 and looked to be headed towards the fastest lap of the day before everything went sideways/skyward. Daly’s speed was particularly impressive because he’d missed several tests and the Lazarus GP team isn’t one of the historically stronger teams in the series.
If nothing else though, Conor Daly started off the year strongly in the racing quotes department with this gem:
Its a real shame. We were quickest car on track until I started barrel rolling. I’m okay. @teamlazarus made huge progress today before that

We’re glad Conor is OK after such a huge shunt and hope we see him on the grid for the GP2 season opener at Sakhir Circuit in Bahrain on April 5th.
