If you ask Subaru, the Japanese carmaker’s head-honchos seem to be content with selling only traditional sedan versions of their latest-gen WRX and WRX STI models, and since we’re willing to believe that they’re not in the business of losing money, we presume that there’s not enough demand for other body styles to justify the development costs.
Still, it isn’t always strictly a matter of making a profit – for example, a special edition WRX STI Coupe, possibly with more ponies under the hood (remember the JDM-only 1998 Impreza 22B STI?), as proposed in one of the following renderings, has the potential to benefit Subaru in other ways, especially in the marketing and communications area.
Leaving out irrelevant body styles such as a crossover (the Forester can cover this niche) and even a convertible, the way we see it, Subaru’s viable options include a coupe, a station wagon, three- and five-door hatchbacks and, as it flagrantly teased without following up through last year’s WRX Concept, a slick four-door coupe.
If you had a say, which one would you choose?
