We’re struggling to think of anything less natural-looking than self-slapping windshield wipers, but that’s exactly what Detroit-based Motor City Wipers hath created. Autoblog first reported on a series of Motor City Wiper’s YouTube videos, one using a Jeep Wrangler and another using a Cadillac CTS, wherein the startup company shows off its multidirectional wiper articulation device, which not only sweeps the wipers through a normal, glass-clearing trajectory, but also up and down off the glass—including a function to violently smack ice off the blades.
For those of you in warm states who never have faced down a frozen windshield first thing in the morning, it sucks, big time, and the most frustrating part is finding out your wipers have ice on them once you’re already underway. This leads to patchy glass-clearing performance, and usually requires a roadside stop to smack the wipers against the glass or whack them with a scraper to break away the ice. That’s why Motor City Wipers’s creation is so genius—it smacks the wipers for you. The best part? The system is activated by everyone’s favorite type of button: a red one—like what we imagine would fire weapons in a fighter jet.
Motor City Wipers’s Wiper Assist isn’t yet for sale. The company had shopped the idea to various automakers without any takers, but it’s currently looking for investors. See the wipers in action in the video below:
