Chris Harris gets behind the wheel of the fastest 991 generation Porsche 911 yet, the hardcore new 911 GT3 RS, for a drive on road and track in Germany. 

Porsche do hardcore track specials arguably better than anyone else, the company practically invented the street-legal GT3 race car genre with the original 911 RS. Many years on and just about every sports car manufacturer out there makes a car in the mould of the 911 GT3 – even Bentley. Sure a Ferrari, McLaren or Lamborghini is ultimately more powerful and faster in a straight-line, but the big-winged 911s have always offered unbeatable bang for your bucks and a level of specialness and usability that is unrivalled.

This brings us to the latest and greatest fast Porsche 911 – the 991 generation GT3 RS. It uses the extra wide Turbo body shell which is stiffened further to accommodate an optional half-cage, it has a totally bespoke weight-saving magnesium roof, all sorts of carbon fibre body parts and the most aggressive aerodynamic package ever fitted to a street-legal 911 – it looks like it came straight from the Nurburgring 24 hour race.

Powering the GT3 RS is a new 4.0-litre naturally aspirated flat six developing 500hp, enough to help it to 62mph in just 3.1 seconds. Naturally, drive is sent to the rear wheels but not via the three-pedal manual gearbox you were expecting, instead it uses a seven-speed PDK dual-clutch joby – making it the first RS to do so.
