Volkswagen release pictures and details of their new Golf R hot hatch. It’s blue. And very fast.
Welcome, people of the Interwebs, to the fastest VW Golf ever – the new speedy Golf R. Like the last generation Golf R, the mk7 is blue, it has four-wheel-drive, a 2.0liter turbocharged engine and is fast. How fast you ask? Try 0-62mph in 4.9 seconds when you opt for the DSG ‘box on for size. That sprint time rises to 5.3 if you choose to swap gears yourself by using three pedals and a stick.
The reason for all of this raw speed and road munching capability comes down to two things. Firstly, the engine – it’s a 2.0liter turbocharged unit producing 296hp and 280lb ft of torque, it is essentially the same power plant that you’ll find in Audi’s new S3 mild-hatch. Secondly, the Golf R has VW’s trusty 4Motion four-wheel-drive system which can shuffle power between the front and rear axles depending on road conditions to maximize grip, so not even a little bit of that power is wasted, it’s all used to slingshot the Golf toward the horizon with complete ferocity. This makes the Golf R a bit of a Q-Car, it could outrun Porsche Caymans and yet it’s a boring old (new) Golf, which looks more or less like the one your grand parents drive… This is good.
Naturally all of the suspension bits have been tinkered with and the R rides 20mm lower than the standard Golf or 5mm lower than the GTI. The Golf R also uses its own specific spring and damper tunes plus VW’s progressive steering system to increase agility.
Aesthetically the R features a subtly aggressive body kit, smoked rear taillights, five spoke 18in alloys, and quad exhaust tips – the only real giveaway that it’s packing some serious punch.
The Golf R will be officially unveiled at next months Frankfurt Motor Show.
