Lotus’ fastest ever drop top gets the go ahead just before Summer! Bring on the summer, bring on the Lotus Exige S Roadster.
Usually when a car looses its roof it puts on a few kilograms because the chassis needs to be strengthened. Then you have to factor in the weight of all the electrical gubbins that operate the roof. This, as you might imagine, ruins the handling and hurts performance. The new Lotus Exige S Roadster isn’t like this however.
It tips the scales at 1170kg, which is not much and approximately 10kg LESS than the standard hard-toped Exige S.
The lovely 3.5liter supercharged V6 is unchanged and develops a meaty 345hp and 295lb ft of torque. That’s enough to send the Roadster to 62mph in four seconds flat and onto a top speed of 145mph, which is quite a lot less than the hardtops 170mph v-max.
Those who love an absolute gale force wind caressing their scalp and high speed track driving can also option the ‘Race Pack’ – good name – which adds stiffer spring and damper rates as well as launch control – you want this. The Serial Precision Shift – flappy paddle gearbox in English – will also be available, but if you want to fully indulge in Lotus’ raw driving experience you’ll stick with the standard six-speed manual ‘box.
Two interior grades will be offered, the comfort orientated trim – which we’ll assume includes some comfier chairs and some carpet to hide the messy chassis welds -, and the stripped out interior for hardcore track day enthusiasts.
Expect to see this new open top stunner on the streets in a couple of months time when the sun is well and truly shining.
