McLaren confirm that the P1 hybrid hypercar has lapped the Nurburgring in under seven minutes. Be scared, Porsche.
And so it begins. Again. There was a moment where it all went quiet after Porsche confirmed a 6:57 Nurburgring lap time for the 918 Spyder and the McLaren P1 was spotted at the ring attempting to beat its lap time. But then, nothing. Total silence. There were rumors that the big-winged McLaren went around the famous German race track in 6:47, conveniently exactly ten seconds quicker than the Porsche, but nothing was officially confirmed, and there was no announcement from McLaren, no nothing.
Now McLaren has indeed confirmed that the P1 has lapped the Nurburgring Nordschleife in less than seven minutes in the hands of chief test driver, Chris Goodwin. Want an exact lap time? You can’t have one! McLaren won’t reveal how far under seven minutes the P1 lapped the ‘Ring. Why? It’s easy to suggest that it’s because the P1 hasn’t beaten its archrival, the Porsche 918. But it could also be because of the blurriness surrounding ‘official’ Nurburgring lap times. Y’see, there’s no agreed upon start/finish line at the ‘Ring, so really there’s no such thing as an ‘official’ lap record. Maybe they just don’t want to embarrass Porsche by confirming a time that is significantly quicker than the 918’s. We don’t know.
Anyway, whatever the lap time is, test driver, Chris Goodwin, was um, ‘on it’, during the lap. Watch the video below and you’ll see what we mean. The car is really on the limit, and it sounds totally feral with all of the turbo whistle, waste gate flutter and V8 bark. Yeah, turn up the volume for this one.
