Coast to coast (New York to LA) in under 29 hours new record set by speedy Mercedes CL driver
Ed Bolian, a Lamborghini dealer in Atlanta set the new record on October 20th. He used a 2004 Mercedes, modified with gadgets to warn him about police. These gadgets, extra fuel tanks and bedpans, allowed Bolian and his two friends to travel the 2813.7 miles at an average of 98 mph, on the trip from Midtown Manhattan to Redondo Beach. They followed the classic route originally taken in the Cannonball Baker Sea-To-Shining Sea Memorial Trophy Dash of the 1970s.
Amazingly, Bolian’s time of 28 hours 50 minutes smashed the previous record set by Alex Roy in 2006 by two hours, when he made the trip in 31 hours 4 minutes.
The Mercedes was altered to have two additional 22-gallon fuel tanks (picture below), which allowed them to travel 800 miles between stops. To avoid obstacles from traffic and the police, Bolian controversially added a police scanner, two GPS units that provided traffic information and got friends to travel 150 miles ahead to report any other obstacles.
