And it’s a HYBRID!
We’re totally baffled. Stunned even. Because, Porsche have created this motor vehicle that quite literally defies the laws of physics. The 918 Spyder will do 78mpg, but also 0-62mph in just 2.8 seconds before topping out at 214mph and it weighs about 1700kg (which is a lot), yet officially charges around the Nurburgring Nordschleife quicker than anything else wearing number plates. And it does all of this without even using any wizardry. Amazing.
Piloted by Marc Lieb on the 4th of September this 887hp technological masterpiece blasted around the Green Hell in 6 minutes 57 seconds making it the first production car to go sub seven minutes around the famous German racetrack. This, naturally, means the 918 is flippin’ fast and Mr. Lieb was decidedly ‘on it’ during the hot lap (he gets airborne slightly…). For comparison, Porsche’s new 911 GT3 takes around 7 minutes 25 seconds to make its way around the ‘Ring and it’s no slouch, y’know.
Now, watch the record-breaking lap…
You really didn’t think we’d go through this whole story without mentioning the McLaren P1, did you?
Here’s that bit: rumors suggest that the McLaren P1 has only managed to lap the ‘Ring in 7:05 despite it’s power, weight and aero advantages over the Porsche, and the engineers aren’t too pleased about that, saying the lap time was five seconds too slow. If the rumors (huge emphasis on this word!) are indeed true then the P1 is now 8 seconds too slow…
Over to you McLaren.
