Volvo Shows Off Coupe Concept | (Photos)

Volvo reveal new Coupe concept which harks back to the iconic P1800 and previews a range of new Volvo vehicles including – finally – the new 2014 XC90 SUV.

“The vanilla days are over” according to Volvo’s new design director, Thomas Ingenlath. That’s quite a bold and perhaps cocky statement, but we think you’ll agree that the man has produced the jam to match the muffin. To these eyes at least, this new Volvo Coupe concept looks like a damn fine motor vehicle. With smooth lines, a bold new face, and sharp rear it delivers a level of style that we haven’t seen from the sensible Swedes since the iconic P1800 bowed out in 1973.

Beneath the suave suit is some clever drive train and chassis technology, too. Under the bonnet lives Volvo’s new 2.0liter Drive-E petrol engine which is turbocharged and supercharged, plus there’s an electric motor to boost power outputs to 395hp and 442lb ft of torque – small numbers they are not. The chassis is based on Volvo’s flexible new Scalable Product Architecture (SPA), which, according to the Volvo boffins, is even more versatile than the Volkswagen Group’s world-ruling MQB platform – a chassis architecture that’s already about as versatile as fried chicken. Or bread…

The first all new vehicle to utilize the SPA platform will be the upcoming second generation XC90, replacing the current car which has been in production for more than TEN years – like an evil villain from a Batman movie it just refuses to die. But the big Volvo SUV will soon be taken well and truly into the future with new technology and styling cues taken straight from this pretty Coupe concept, Mr. Ingenlath says “you will recognize the connection [with the Coupe concept] instantly when it’s revealed next year” – excellent.

The interior of the Coupe is completely unlike any current Volvo product and it looks like a beautifully designed piece of sculpture – it’s a total design revolution. The dash is dominated by a large central display surrounded by large air-con vents and minimal switchgear. It’s a very clean and modern design but still an evidently production ready one which should feature in the new XC90.

Volvo will show two more concept cars before the new XC90 is officially revealed at some stage next year – and if they’re anything like this Coupe they should look rather handsome.
