Andy Warhol’s ‘Pop Art’ painting, the ‘Mercedes-Benz W 196 R Grand Prix Car’, produced in 1986, is up for auction this week at Christie’s New York.
It’s expected to fetch a whopping US$12-16 million!! Fancy bidding?! Love Mercedes-Benz?
The piece of art features the Mercedes-Benz W196 R Grand Prix Car (streamlined version 1954) and it is painted 12 times in bright colours on black canvas, in Warhols’s signature style. The canvas is huge (too big for the average house!), measuring fourteen feet tall and it was made by Andy Warhol for the automobile’s centenary, so it’s also pretty significant historically. Amazingly, the Mercedes-Benz W196 R Grand Prix Car won 9 races between 1954-55!
The painting is currently owned by The Daimler Company, the maker of Mercedes-Benz. They have an incredible art collection and the proceeds will go towards developing this even more. Warhol’s work is known for going for big money, (Eight Elvises (1963) went for US$100 million), so watch this space!
