The ultimate Christmassy destination has to be Lapland! There are a number of routes you can take via road from Finland, Norway or Sweden depending on what else you’d like to see/where the cheapest flights are. However, the route from Norway offers spectacular views along the Fjords as you go. Once you’ve arrived in the region of Lapland there is plenty to explore – this is not just a destination for families with young children, of course there’s santa, reindeer and husky drawn sleds but there’s also ski resorts, museums, mines and a whole lot more!
Why not combine your ski holiday with a road trip this year? Taking your own car can cut down on cost, there’s no such thing as a baggage allowance and you can experience breathtaking views of the Alps on the way. With most major French, Austrian, Swiss and Italian resorts such as Tignes, Kitzhbul, Verbier and many more are between 8 and 10 hours from Calais directly, or you could make things more adventurous and devise your own route to take in as much scenery as possible!
To take a trip closer to home, why not venture to Cumbria for spectacular scenes of snow capped mountains reflected in the perfectly still waters of the Lake District. You can visit the various lakes and sleepy towns; Skipton is a lovely town with a canal, cobbled streets, old fashioned shops and pubs which becomes even more atmospheric in the winter.
Keeping things on homeland, visit Dorset for a taste of traditional German Christmas Markets. Pick up some last minute Christmas gifts, watch carol singers, tuck in to a hog roast roll and mince pie and wash it all down with a mulled cider (maybe not for the driver!). There are many markets on around Dorset so be sure to check out times and dates before you go to avoid disappointment.
Iceland’s jaw-dropping scenery is incredible on its own all year around; add some snow and ice, frozen waterfalls, lava flows, fiery geysers, hot springs, blue lagoon outside spa, glaciers and more you could spend a very long time exploring this winter wonderland! By hiring your own car and road-tripping around this beautiful country you can tailor make your journey ensuring you visit the places and sites you want, and can take in the amazing scenery at your own pace.
One of the most magical aspects of winter is the Aurora Borealis. There are a number of countries which fall in the aurora belt providing us with prime viewing spots – Norway, Finland, Sweden, Iceland, Greenland, Alaska, Canada and Russia all experience this spectacular light show. All these countries have spectacular scenery and other sights/activities so no matter what your interests you should be able to find a country perfect for you to combine the Northern Lights in to a fantastic winter road trip! Don’t forget to check out the best times for viewing to ensure you experience them at their best.
