Porsche let you build and customize your
very own 918 Spyder hybrid supercar! For FREE! On the Interwebs…
‘Build your own’ buttons on car manufacturer websites are dangerous. Click on one of these enticing little buttons and you will, without doubt, waste at least an hour customizing a vehicle of some sort that you’ll probably never buy. Jaguar and Land Rover, oh, and Mini, too, have perhaps the worst (best) online customization widgets because there are literally thousands of possible design outcomes.
The other night I spent an amount of time customizing my very own F-Type that I am slightly ashamed to mention – it was more than an hour. A lot more. The same thing happened when I built my own Range Rover Evoque. And the same thing happened when I built my own Porsche 918 Spyder recently.
Yes, that’s right, there’s now a ‘build your own’ option for the Porsche 918 Spyder! What an excellent idea! Despite the fact that just 918 people in the entire world will actually be able to buy Porsche’s 875hp hybrid hypercar, anyone can create their own virtual version and dream a little.
I’ve painted mine black, and I haven’t given it the perilously expensive Weisach Pack, mainly because I think the satin black wheels look cooler and stealthier than the lightweight magnesium ones that the Weisach Pack adds. I’ve also optioned the red leather interior with carbon fiber pack, which looks damn tasty to me.
*It will be quite a pointless, time-consuming exercise. Naturally, I was drawn into the process of building my own 911 GT3 as well…
