Rear-wheel-drive version of the Lambo Huracan will be unveiled at the time of the Los Angeles Auto Show, ahead of sales starting in 2016.
The Italian brand’s boss Stephan Winkelmann revealed at last year’s Pebble Beach Concours event that a rear-drive Huracan was under consideration. “We did it with theGallardo so it might be an option,” he said. “We are a four-wheel-drive super-sports car [manufacturer] but why should we not do a rear-drive option? We need lots of derivatives. Customers expect it and we always need something new to talk about.”
Now it has emerged that the rear-drive Huracan will make its debut around the times of the Los Angeles show. Autocar understands that the debut will be followed up swiftly by a sales launch in the first quarter of 2016 – although Lamborghini’s close relationship with its customer base means that key buyers are likely to already have put down deposits or at least registered interest in the vehicle.
Lamborghini sold the rear-drive Gallardo as a less expensive alternative to the standard four-wheel-drive car; this is unlikely to be repeated with the Huracan. Expect the rear-drive version to be packaged as a more extreme and lighter variant – and to carry a higher price tag with it. It is also likely to be a limited edition, echoing the 250-unit run of the rear-wheel-drive Gallardo – but could well be followed by a rear-drive version of the Huracan LP610-4 Spyder.
