All-new 2016 Ford F150 Raptor performance truck makes Detroit motor show debut.

Ford has revealed its new terrain-crushing hardcore pick-up truck, the F150 Raptor at this year’s Detroit motor show. The new model is faster, smarter, and tougher than the outgoing version and will go on sale in 2016.

Powered by a 3.5-litre Ecoboost turbocharged V6 engine, the new model produces both more peak horsepower and torque than the old 6.2-litre V8 version which packed 411hp and 434lb-ft, while being significantly more fuel efficient than before, claims Ford. While exact outputs haven’t yet been specified, a similar Ecoboost unit makes over 600hp in Ford’s new GT halo supercar.

The transmission in the new model is an advanced ten-speed automatic connected to a heavy duty four-wheel drive system with low-range transfer case, which should give the Raptor excellent rock-crawling and desert-storming capability.

The suspension of the new model has also been beefed up, with larger FOX Racing Shox and more suspension travel than before. The truck’s terrain management traction control system has also been modified to make the new F150 Raptor the most capable off-road production vehicle in the world.

It’s clever, too. The new Raptor is fitted with intelligent LED headlight technology and new camera technology improves visibility in dark and light conditions. An aluminum-intensive body has also helped to reduce the Raptor’s kerb weight by around 225kg (500lb) compared to the old model.

Visually, the Raptor gets a tough new grille with a more heavy-duty front bumper and is around 150mm wider than a standard F150 thanks to wheel arch extensions which cover the massive all-terrain tyres. At the rear the road-going race truck gets a new tailgate, rear bumper and a pair of massive exhaust pipes. Inside the Raptor features a sports steering wheel with gearshift paddles for the ten-speed automatic gearbox.
