Chris Harris has driven the brand new Ferrari 488 GTB supercar, Ferrari’s first new turbocharged supercar since the legendary F40.
Any day Chris Harris uploads a video to his awesome Youtube channel is a good day. When that video is a first drive of the hotly anticipated new Ferrari 488 GTB supercar, well, you get the idea. The new 488 GTB replaces the hugely successful 458 and is more an evolution of that car rather than an all-new one. About 85% is new compared to the Ferrari 458, while the basic passenger cell carries over so it still looks like a 458 from certain angles.
The big news with the new Ferrari 488 GTB is in the engine compartment. Gone is the stunning 4.5-litre naturally aspirated V8 of the 458, now replaced by a 3.9-litre twin-turbo V8 that pumps out a frankly insane 670hp. That’s around 70hp more than the fastest 458 – the hardcore Speciale. The result is a 0-62mph time of three seconds flat but more tellingly a quarter mile time of 10.45 seconds. The thing is ballistic.
Despite the mind-bending performance, some still were worried the 458’s turbocharged replacement wouldn’t deliver the spine-tingling aural excitement of its predecessor. Not to worry though, Ferrari has worked hard to make this engine produce a symphony worthy of a Ferrari supercar – the new 488 GTB sounds almost the same as the 458.
