Red Bull Racing launches 2015 F1 racecar with camo livery

    2015 Redbull RB11 F1 race car

Mercedes, Ferrari and McLaren were stood up at this week’s pre-season Jerez Formula 1 test as Red Bull unveiled a striking new test livery for their car.

It’s not often that Red Bull Racing let their hair down and do something a bit outlandish. Their livery has barely changed since the old Jaguar F1 team was taken over by the cashed-up energy drink company and is a strictly business affair with the typical Red Bull logos and a few others. However, at this week’s pre-season Formula 1 test in Jerez, the Red Bull RB11 racer rocked a dark black and white camouflage livery, which has since become the talk of the pit lane.

Originally intended to hide the car’s aerodynamic secrets from rival teams like Mercedes-AMG and Ferrari, the livery has wowed F1 fans with some calling for Red Bull to keep the wrap for the rest of the 2015 F1 season. However, that seems pretty unlikely given that you have to squint to recognise the sponsor logos.

Red Bull’s driver lineup for 2015 includes Aussie young gun Daniel Ricciardo, who was the only non-Mercedes driver to win races last year while his then teammate and four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel struggled. Vettel will drive a Ferrari this year, marking his first season away from Red Bull. Red Bull’s second driver is another young lad, Danny Kvyat from Russia.

Power issues plagued Red Bull last season as the Renault turbo V6 engine didn’t have the outright grunt of the Mercedes engines, however things should be different this season. Red Bull is now Renault’s soul engine customer, and this has allowed the car and engine designers to work more closely for better integration of chassis and power unit.

Reigning world champions Mercedes are tipped to be a dominant force once again this year, while McLaren and Ferrari have four world champion drivers in total and should be strong. More will be revealed once the lights go out in Melbourne next month, marking the start of the 2015 F1 season.

    Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe revealed

    Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe

BMW X6 rivalling Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe revealed.

Mercedes has unleashed its assault on the SUV coupe niche currently occupied only by the BMW X6.

Like the X6, the new GLE is claimed to be a coupe, but unless your eyes are painted on it clearly features four doors and sits too high off the ground to be a traditional coupe.

Instead, the GLE is more of an SUV with a slightly lower roofline and an abnormal growth on its backside. The GLE Coupe ‘aint pretty.

Because the new model is based on the existing Mercedes ML SUV, the new car is fitted with the same plush interior with the gear selector in the wrong place – the steering column where you’d normally find the indicator stalk…

Engine options include the usual suspects – a 3.0-litre turbodiesel V6 with 258hp in the base GLE 350 d, and a 333hp petrol V6 in the GLE 400, while the range-topping (for now) GLE 450 AMG gets a 367hp version of the 400’s motor.

All models are equipped with a trick new 9-speed automatic gearbox and 4MATIC all-wheel drive system which features a 50:50 torque split on all models bar the sportier GLE 450 AMG which sends 60 per cent of the engines torque rear-wards.

The standard suspension setup is conventional steel springs with adaptive dampers which are connected to Comfort, Sport and Sport+ drive modes. However, you will be able to option Mercedes’ new-generation air-suspension which is now available with continuously variable adaptive dampers to ensure the GLE always offers maximum comfort while also delivering the best possible handling characteristics.

Electronically controlled front and rear anti-roll bars also activate in Sport and Sport+ drive modes to minimize the impact of potholes on the car’s cornering attitude.

For now just three models will be available, though a V8-powered GLE63 AMG is expected to arrive shortly after the GLE Coupe range goes on sale next year.

    Ultra-Rare AMG Mercedes-Benz 300SL Up For Sale

    1954-mercedes-benz-300sl-amg

Mercedes-Benz’s in-house tuner AMG was only established in 1967 but the company has built a handful of original 300SLs in the past, including this 1954 gullwing. As the story goes, Brunei’s car crazy Sultan asked AMG if it could it take an original 300SL gulling coupe and 300SL roadster and fit them both with modern internals.

As drastic as it sounds, there was apparently enough demand that nine other examples were built (other buyers are believed to be from the Brunei royal family). So between 1996 and 2009, AMG took 11 original 300SLs–eight coupes and three roadsters–and did a restomod on them. They were then sold for a price of more than a million euros ($1.39 million at current exchange rates) each.

Now, one of the cars is up for sale. It’s a 1954 example with chassis number 198040. It will be going under the hammer at an RM Auctions event in Monaco in early May.

The chassis and body are original but most of the rest of the car is new. Instead of the original straight-six, it’s powered by a 6.0-liter V-8 rated at 380 horsepower and 427 pound-feet of torque. The 300SL’s original swing-arm rear suspension has also made way for a modern five-link setup, and also added to the mix were Bilstein shocks and AMG light alloys. Power steering, disc brakes and a four-speedautomatic transmission have also been added.

The interior is almost completely new and features a mixture of Nappa leather and Alcantara trim. As the shots reveal, the car also gets a HWA steering wheel, a Sony CD changer and carbon fiber protective panels. Other subtle interior touches include a steering-column lock for heightened security, as well as a complete set of original 300SL instruments which were adapted to modern comfort and electronic operation.

No estimate has been given but another of the AMG-modified 300SLs went up for auction in 2009 and sold for £462,000 ($767,460). That’s comparable with the price of an unmolested example so it will be interesting to see what this one will go for given the current mania in rare classics.

Other special cars to look out for during the RM Auction in Monaco, which gets underway May 10, include a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTE, 1969 Lamborghini Miura P400S, 1985 Porsche 959 prototype, and Ferrari and Brabham Formula One cars from 1989 and 1966, respectively.
