Mercedes F1 driver Lewis Hamilton buys LaFerrari

    LaFerrari

Mercedes F1 boss says his boy Lewis Hamilton has bought a $1.7 million Ferrari LaFerrari hybrid hypercar.

Reigning Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton has an interesting collection of exotic cars in his garage. When he’s not behind the wheel of his winning Mercedes F1 machine, he gets around in a range of different personal cars including a Rolls Royce, classic Ford Mustang and a Pagani Zonda 760LH which was built specially for the British driver.

To celebrate his second world title in 2014, and his win at the 2015 F1 season opener in Melbourne Australia Lewis Hamilton ordered a Ferrari LaFerrari, says team boss Toto Wolff. Of course, Ferrari is one of Mercedes’ biggest on-track rivals in Formula 1 but at the moment Merc and its AMG performance division don’t build a supercar to rival the likes of LaFerrari, McLaren P1 and Porsche 918.

The LaFerrari is a limited edition mid-engine V12 hybrid monster which packs a total of 960hp and can hit 186mph (300km/h) in under 15 seconds making it one of the most accelerative production cars on the planet. It’s also one of the most expensive, worth around $1.7 million.

Unlike his world champion rivals Sebastian Vettel, Kimi Raikkonen and Fernando Alonso who have all been Ferrari F1 drivers, Hamilton is unlikely to be invited to drive the Ferrari hybrid hyper car around the maker’s Fiorano test track. With the quickest car on the grid and enough money to hire any track in the world, we doubt Hamilton will be worried about missing out on a go around Fiorano.

Red Bull Racing launches 2015 F1 racecar with camo livery

    2015 Redbull RB11 F1 race car

Mercedes, Ferrari and McLaren were stood up at this week’s pre-season Jerez Formula 1 test as Red Bull unveiled a striking new test livery for their car.

It’s not often that Red Bull Racing let their hair down and do something a bit outlandish. Their livery has barely changed since the old Jaguar F1 team was taken over by the cashed-up energy drink company and is a strictly business affair with the typical Red Bull logos and a few others. However, at this week’s pre-season Formula 1 test in Jerez, the Red Bull RB11 racer rocked a dark black and white camouflage livery, which has since become the talk of the pit lane.

Originally intended to hide the car’s aerodynamic secrets from rival teams like Mercedes-AMG and Ferrari, the livery has wowed F1 fans with some calling for Red Bull to keep the wrap for the rest of the 2015 F1 season. However, that seems pretty unlikely given that you have to squint to recognise the sponsor logos.

Red Bull’s driver lineup for 2015 includes Aussie young gun Daniel Ricciardo, who was the only non-Mercedes driver to win races last year while his then teammate and four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel struggled. Vettel will drive a Ferrari this year, marking his first season away from Red Bull. Red Bull’s second driver is another young lad, Danny Kvyat from Russia.

Power issues plagued Red Bull last season as the Renault turbo V6 engine didn’t have the outright grunt of the Mercedes engines, however things should be different this season. Red Bull is now Renault’s soul engine customer, and this has allowed the car and engine designers to work more closely for better integration of chassis and power unit.

Reigning world champions Mercedes are tipped to be a dominant force once again this year, while McLaren and Ferrari have four world champion drivers in total and should be strong. More will be revealed once the lights go out in Melbourne next month, marking the start of the 2015 F1 season.

    Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe revealed

    Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe

BMW X6 rivalling Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe revealed.

Mercedes has unleashed its assault on the SUV coupe niche currently occupied only by the BMW X6.

Like the X6, the new GLE is claimed to be a coupe, but unless your eyes are painted on it clearly features four doors and sits too high off the ground to be a traditional coupe.

Instead, the GLE is more of an SUV with a slightly lower roofline and an abnormal growth on its backside. The GLE Coupe ‘aint pretty.

    Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe

    Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe

Because the new model is based on the existing Mercedes ML SUV, the new car is fitted with the same plush interior with the gear selector in the wrong place – the steering column where you’d normally find the indicator stalk…

Engine options include the usual suspects – a 3.0-litre turbodiesel V6 with 258hp in the base GLE 350 d, and a 333hp petrol V6 in the GLE 400, while the range-topping (for now) GLE 450 AMG gets a 367hp version of the 400’s motor.

All models are equipped with a trick new 9-speed automatic gearbox and 4MATIC all-wheel drive system which features a 50:50 torque split on all models bar the sportier GLE 450 AMG which sends 60 per cent of the engines torque rear-wards.

The standard suspension setup is conventional steel springs with adaptive dampers which are connected to Comfort, Sport and Sport+ drive modes. However, you will be able to option Mercedes’ new-generation air-suspension which is now available with continuously variable adaptive dampers to ensure the GLE always offers maximum comfort while also delivering the best possible handling characteristics.

    Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe

    Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe

Electronically controlled front and rear anti-roll bars also activate in Sport and Sport+ drive modes to minimize the impact of potholes on the car’s cornering attitude.

For now just three models will be available, though a V8-powered GLE63 AMG is expected to arrive shortly after the GLE Coupe range goes on sale next year.

This Armored G63 AMG Limo Is One Badass Ride

For those in need of an armored car, a former military vehicle seems like a sound choice. Those tend to be cramped, loud, and low on amenities though. Unless the vehicle in question is a Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG, that is.

Canadian firm INKAS will turn the G63 AMG into an armored limousine with an interior as luxurious as its exterior is tough and intimidating.

ALSO SEE: Compilation Of Supercars Starting Is A Great Use Of The Internet: Video

The G63 gets stretched at the B-pillar, making room for an entertainment center. The rear seats sport footrests and can recline flat. Naturally, everything is trimmed in leather and wood,

    inkas-mercedes-benz-g63-amg-armored-limo_100474148_l

The exterior gets a different type of expensive trim. While it looks essentially stock–even retaining the factory side exhaust–the Inkas G63 limo is fully armored, with a reinforced roof, doors, glass, quarter panels, firewall and pillars. INKAS says it will withstand 7.62 mm ammunition, while the floor can withstand a blast from two DM51 grenades detonated simultaneously.

Other notable features include “bullet catchers” designed to deflect projectiles away from the door crevices, protection for the battery, electronic control module, and fuel tank, and reinforced hinges to handle the weight of the armored doors.

    inkas-mercedes-benz-g63-amg-armored-limo_100474153_l

The 5.5-liter, twin-turbocharged V-8 gets a slight power bump, from 536 horsepower to 544. Torque remains the same at 560 pound-feet, but the stock 0 to 60 mph time of 5.3 seconds probably isn’t possible, given the added weight of the armor.

INKAS will also armor a stock G63 AMG without converting it into a limo. The real question, though, is what it would do if presented with a G63 AMG 6×6.

Brabus: The Weird World of the European Luxury Aftermarket

Enter a world where too much power still isn't enough

Brabus is weird, but in a good way. It’s the single largest Mercedes tuner in the world, achieving that title after Daimler assimilated Mercedes-AMG into its affiliate network way back in the ‘90s. Since then, Brabus has expanded its reach outside the Mercedes empire; its latest creation is a Range Rover Sport that will definitely turn your head, if not snap it completely off.

Power is the single most important part of a Brabus car.

It’s technically a Brabus, as that is the company that built the kit, but it’s being marketed under the Startech name so as not to cause confusion about what Brabus is built to do. That doesn’t mean the company doesn’t enjoy side projects, although given the amount of add-ons for the Range Rover Sport, you can’t really call it a “side project.”

The biggest change to the Sport’s body is the inclusion of carbon fiber body panels. Once the fender flares are added to the new bodywork, the Sport gains over two inches of width, making it slightly narrower than the average studio in Manhattan. Body panels alone won’t change the look, though, so Brabus has gone and added 23-inch wheels with low-profile tires, a lowered suspension, and a big ol’ roof spoiler atop the liftgate. It looks like, well, it looks like a heavily modified, expensive European luxury car. Mission accomplished, then.

    Startech Range Rover Sport

Oh, but wait. We almost forgot about the engine, otherwise known as Brabus’s most favorite thing ever. On the Sport, a mild ECU upgrade brings an extra 31 horsepower and 59 lb-ft to the twin-turbo diesel V-6 underhood. If you look at the history of Brabus as a company, you’ll see what we mean by “most favorite thing ever.”

Power and torque are very, very important to Brabus. The company’s goal is, and always has been, maximizing engine performance through upgrades out the wazoo. Whether it’s the same engine that came with the car, or one that Brabus decided to shove in there instead, power is the most important part of a Brabus car. Of course, the company also deals with exterior and interior aesthetic upgrades to further differentiate the vehicle; after all, if you’re paying unspeakable amounts of money to upgrade your already expensive car, you want it to stand out from the rest.

If you’re not a fan of the piecemeal method, you can buy an entire car from Brabus instead. Brabus will order the car from Mercedes, overhaul it, and then send it right to your door. A number of its vehicles have broken street-legal speed records, mostly due to the insane amounts of power and torque surging to the wheels. Let’s take a look at a few of the more ridiculous ones.

The Brabus E V12 starts with a normal E-Class sedan, which is a fine car in and of itself. Then Brabus adds the twin-turbo V-12 motor from the Mercedes S65 AMG. Then Brabus completely changes the engine, giving it more power and torque than is necessary to operate an entire city block’s worth of cars. In its most current form, that leaves the owner with 780 horsepower and 1,100 lb-ft of torque. Only the truly insane will reach the E V12’s top speed of 230 miles per hour. You can also get it in coupe and convertible variants, because why not?

    Brabus E V12
    Brabus E V12
    Brabus E V12

If you think that was an exciting car, wait until you see its successor. The Brabus Rocket 800 starts with a standard 2011+ Mercedes CLS-Class and shoves yet another V-12 under the bonnet. In addition to the engine modifications, power is increased thanks to new turbo manifolds, new turbos, four intercoolers, and a free-flowing exhaust system. It produces about 800 horsepower (go figure, what with the name and all) and 1,100 lb-ft of torque, which must be artificially lowered to keep the transmission from exploding all over the ground.

Oh, and it meets the current EURO V emissions standards. Talk about leaving no stone unturned.

    Brabus Rocket 800

We clearly saved the best for last. If you thought the Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG 6×6 was the craziest thing you’ve seen this year, wait until you check out the Brabus 700 6×6. It takes the G63’s standard 5.5-liter V-8 engine and cranks the whole thing up to 15 (or at least, well past 11), with two new turbochargers contributing to the 700-horsepower output. The 6×6 itself is insane, but with Brabus power levels and an interior that would make George Soros feel poor, it’s so far north of insane that it’s almost back to the baseline of normal. Almost.

The Continental: BMW Doubts Modernism, Benz Sending Non-Corleone Vito to U.S., AMG on a Roll

Each week, CarandDrivers German correspondent slices and dices the latest rumblings, news, and quick-hit driving impressions from the other side of the pond. His byline may say Jens Meiners, but we simply call him . . . the Continental.

    2015 BMW 435i Gran Coupe

BMW’s F30 3-series architecture is one of the industry’s most fertile, with the latest body variation, the 4-series Gran Coupe, coming to market in just two years. (The F30 platform sits beneath the 3-series sedan, Gran Turismo, and wagon, and a version also underpins the 4-series coupe and convertible.) The four-door Gran Coupe is quite a bit more expensive than a 3-series sedan and not as practical as the 3-series Gran Turismo, but it is probably the most beautiful variation of the platform next to the 4-series coupe. The hatchback shape with its short, stubby deck reminds me of the premium hatches of the 1980s, such as the Merkur Scorpio and the Saab 9000.

While it might seem like BMW is chasing every conceivable niche, and even inventing new ones (X6, anyone?), it unfortunately won’t be chasing the small, high-performance four-door-coupe genre. An M4 Gran Coupe isn’t in the cards, BMW sources tell me, because that particular niche is just too small. There will be the M3 sedan, the M4 coupe, and the M4 cabriolet—and that’s it.

    BMW 4-series Modern Line

In other BMW news, the automaker might drop the “Modern Line” equipment level from its portfolio soon. Sold in Europe as an alternative to the base model, as well as the somewhat conservative “Luxury Line” and sporty “Sport Line,” the “Modern” trim aims to create a wellness-type environment with soft, monochromatic colors schemes and unusual (modern!) materials. (A 4-series cockpit thus equipped is pictured above.) I am told that most customers dislike the look, especially the light-colored steering wheel and the three-dimensional “Fineline Pure” wood trim. Personally, I disagree with them, and I applaud BMW’s courage to try out new color and trim designs. If I were in the market for a new 3-series, mine would be a manual-transmission 335i with the “Modern Line” package.

    The new Mercedes-Benz V-class

The V-class. Its sister model, the Vito, will come to the U.S.

Vito for America, No Qoros for Europe—Yet

It is not clear yet whether Mercedes-Benz will bring its new V-class family van to the U.S. market. The passenger van would fill a niche long ago inhabited by the Volkswagen Eurovan. But I got confirmation from the company that the V-class’s commercial-van sister model, the Vito, will be sent stateside. It’ll be powered by Benz’s ubiquitous 2.1-liter, OM651 turbodiesel, and even though the Vito hasn’t been unveiled yet, it likely won’t look much different from the V-class.

    Qoros 3 hatchback

We had thought that the Qoros 3 hatchback was designed mainly for Europe.

The Chinese auto revolution in Europe will be delayed. Qoros, the offspring of a joint venture by Chery and an Israeli corporation, was supposed to be launched in key European markets by 2015. Now the brand’s vice chairman Volker Steinwascher, a former VW executive, says that it is “not clear when we will come to Europe,” adding, “Europe is not attractive right now.” Steinwascher was speaking at the CAR Symposium in Bochum, which is organized by Professor Ferdinand Dudenhöffer and is regarded as one of the big events on the automotive calendar in Germany.

    Opel Astra OPC Extreme

This will be the fastest street-legal Astra ever.

    Some Geneva Auto Show News

News about the upcoming Geneva auto show’s big debuts is beginning to trickle in. Here’s a photo of the upcoming Opel Astra OPC Extreme (written in all caps by Opel). According to Opel, this OPC will be the fastest street-legal Astra ever, and a low-volume production run is promised, as well. There are few details, but this racy picture is more than enough to whet our appetite. So . . . how about that Buick version?

An electric luxury car from Liechtenstein

Meanwhile, Liechtenstein-based nanoFLOWCELL AG has announced a concept car called the Quant for Geneva. It is running and driving prototype of a fully electric, S-class–sized four-door sedan, and will be used to help evaluate energy flow and charging and regeneration strategies in electric cars. I, for one, am mostly curious about the styling—just look at that teaser shot above. Also, this is the first car to come out of Liechtenstein in a very long time; anyone remember the Jehle Saphier? We’ll wait while you Google that one.

    Audi Sport Quattro concept

At this year’s CES show in Las Vegas, Audi unveiled a prototype laser headlight system on the hot Sport Quattro concept car. So is laser light the next big thing after halogen, HID, and full LED headlights? In a word, no. Engineers tell me that laser light won’t be able to emit the wide carpet of light needed for low-beam applications. But it will be an excellent addition to today’s LEDs and HIDs, as it provides an extremely powerful high-beam functionality. And it sounds cool to say your car has “laser light,” doesn’t it?

AMG Driving Academy, Winter Sporting Basic, A 45 AMG, 2013

    Congrats, AMG

AMG has just celebrated its most successful year ever, having sold 32,200 AMG-badged cars globally. The compact and relatively affordable A45 AMG and CLA45 AMG models undoubtedly will further boost this figure, and the brutish G63 AMG SUV continues to sell in record numbers. Congratulations are in order to AMG chief Tobias Moers, and to his predecessors Volker Mornhinweg and Ola Källenius, who helped to put the current program on track to success.

Still buddies? Dieter Zetsche and Andreas Renschler.

Meanwhile, corporate Daimler drama is unfolding around the sudden departure of Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicle chief Andreas Renschler. The executive is rumored to be headed to the Volkswagen Group, where he could take charge of that outfit’s commercial vehicle group once former Scania chief Leif Östling retires. However, Daimler chief Dieter Zetsche reportedly has said that Renschler won’t be working for a competitor “in the foreseeable future.” Let’s see how this one will unfold . . .

The Doberhuahua, left, and Mercedes-Benz’s CLA on the right.

One final remark on this year’s Super Bowl commercials, which my colleagues have covered ad nauseam: Is it just me, or did Audi model its mildly terrifying Doberhuahua creature after the Mercedes-Benz CLA-class?

Mercedes-Benz To Launch Electric Car ‘B-Class Electric Drive crossover SUV’ In US

    Mercedes Electric Car

Mercedes Electric CarMercedes-Benz is known as one of the world’s premier luxury carmakers, and also has been taking a strong position on green technology over the last several years. For instance, its S250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY was selected for the World Green Car award in 2012, despite being a diesel turbo rather than a hybrid. The company has also been testing limited production runs of fuel-cell powered cars in the United States since 2010.

However, the new B-Class Electric Drive crossover SUV is going to be a first for the German auto manufacturer. Although Mercedes-Benz has produced hybrid SUVs in the past, and continues to produce other hybrid models, this is the first pure electric model that Mercedes-Benz has brought to the mass market. The car is based on the company’s successful B-Class compact crossover, which is a favorite in Europe and is also on sale in Canada – albeit with a traditional gas engine. However, the B-Class is new to the United States – with one very notable exception.

Back in 2010, Mercedes-Benz carried out a limited-availability launch of its latest hydrogen fuel-cell powered vehicle – and this was also based on the B-Class platform. There were only several dozen of these vehicles available in the United States – and they could only be leased, not purchased. However, the feedback on the fuel-cell technology in these cars has been positive, which may be a good sign for the upcoming B-Class Electric Drive. Mercedes-Benz has probably also made a good decision by launching a battery-powered electric car to the mass market first, rather than going with a fuel-cell model – while recharging points for battery-powered cars are readily available, the infrastructure for distributing hydrogen to fuel-cell vehicles is limited at this time.

Another good sign for the B-Class Electric Drive is that much of the electric engine technology in the vehicle is a product of the partnership between Mercedes-Benz and Tesla, one of the current leaders in the electric car market. In fact, Tesla has been extremely successful commercially with its models, and has set the standard for reliability in electric drives. Given the combination of this proven electric technology and a commercially successful platform in the B-Class, the new model represents a relatively low risk for potential purchasers.

The new B-Class Electric Drive will provide a very reasonable 174 hp and 250 pound feet of torque. Given the size of the vehicle, that is more than enough for both city and highway driving. It may seem strange to talk about highway driving with an electric car, but the range of the vehicle is also very good for a battery-powered car. Mercedes-Benz claims that the range will be more than 100 miles when the battery is fully charged – and the good news is that it only takes four hours to recharge the vehicle from a full discharge. In fact, the company also claims that the car will be able to drive 60 miles after just two hours of charging. Obviously, that’s not enough to go on a cross-country trip, but it’s perfectly acceptable for a long commute into work. The short charging time is also a bonus – recharging is significantly faster than for a Toyota RAV4 EV, which is the only other compact crossover electric vehicle on the market.

Initial reports from people who have driven prototype versions of the car indicate that while Mercedes-Benz has put a lot of effort into creating a fuel-efficient battery-powered car, it hasn’t made any major sacrifices when it comes to the level of quality that people expect from the company. The consensus is that the ride is extremely smooth and that the levels of trim are everything that you would expect in a vehicle from one of the world’s leading luxury carmakers.

“The B-Class Electric Drive is whisper-quiet on the highway. Mercedes says it employed extensive noise countermeasures to ensure the electric B-Class is silent at speed,” writes Popular Mechanics. “Paddle shifters on the steering column control the level of regenerative braking you get from the powertrain..”

    Mercedes Electric Car

If the Mercedes-Benz B-Class Electric Drive sounds like something you are interested in, then you will have to restrain your enthusiasm for at least a few months more. The company plans to start selling the vehicle this summer in California, Connecticut, Maryland, Oregon, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont, and anticipates rolling it out to the rest of the country in 2015. The price has not been announced to date.
