Dinan Elevates The Already Heavenly BMW 1M To New Heights (VIDEO)

The 2011 BMW 1 Series M Coupe is extremely high on the list of cars that every enthusiast should drive at least once. It’s a perfect example of exactly what BMW is capable of when it remembers that it used to build cars fitting the tagline; The Ultimate Driving Machine. Under the hood of the 1M sits a 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine that’s aided by a pair of turbochargers. It’s called the N54, and it’s a truly wonderful engine that has found love amongst the BMW faithful. It’s also the perfect starting point for a company like Dinan to go nuts.

MUST WATCH: Open Your Ears To Take In The EcoBoost-Powered 2015 Mustang

Enter the Dinan S3-R BMW 1M… or Dinan 1M for short.

What the Dinan team have done is turn the 1M into a truly amazing machine. That’s a pretty excellent achievement considering the 1M is already amazing. Dinan has gone further, however, because the S3-R now produces 444 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque from the N54 engine. This comes about thanks to larger turbochargers, an air-to-air intercooler, and a host of other under-hood goodies.

Cars Swallowed By Giant Sinkhole In Baltimore: Video

Cars Swallowed By Giant Sinkhole In Baltimore: Video

Cars and sinkholes really do not mix. That much became clear when the National Corvette Museum in Kentucky lost eight rare Chevy Corvettes to a sinkhole back in December–and now a street in Baltimore has swallowed several more vehicles.

MUST SEE: Watch Senna Catch Prost In The Rain At Monaco, Announced By James Hunt: Video

Days of heavy rain is thought to be responsible for the sinkhole, which spanned a whole city block and has forced the evacuation of homes facing the street. This video, from YouTube user ToddTesla, shows the hole during its formation (be sure to watch right to the end). Several members of the public witnessed vehicles, trees, street lamps and roadway falling crashing down onto railroad tracks below.

Residents could be forced out of their homes for up to 40 days, while the damage is assessed and the area made safe. The local fire department reports no fatalities or injuries–but residents say the street has been a subject of concern for some time now. Emergency crews are recovering any cars left teetering on the edge, but other residents will be left counting the cost of their vehicles, as many have plunged into the rocky, muddy ditch left by the sinkhole like the ones in this clip.

    Stunning 800-HP 1967 Shelby GT500 ‘Tribute’ Built To Celebrate Mustang’s 50th

    1967-ford-shelby-gt500-mustang

The 50th anniversary of the Ford Mustang’s debut on April 17 back in 1964 will be the cause for celebrations large and small this year, with everyone from Blue Oval bigwigs to the car’s legions of loyal fans getting in on the fun.

ALSO SEE: How To Put A 2015 Ford Mustang On Top Of The Empire State Building: Video

One of those celebrations will take place Friday in Charlotte, North Carolina, where restoration company RK Motors will unveil a tribute car based on the classic 1967 Shelby GT500 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, coinciding with Ford Motor Company’s [NYSE:F] own Mustang 50th anniversary celebrations.

Dubbed RK527, the customized GT500 makes over 800 horsepower, according to its creator, which is sent to the rear wheels through a Tremec T56 six-speed manual transmission. The car has been significantly updated, with features like Fast XFI electronic port fuel injection and modern BF Goodrich G-Force Sport tires.

The RK527 will need to be as reliable as it is powerful, because RK Motors owner Rob Kauffman plans to take it on Hot Rod magazine’s annual Power Tour. The event–which begins in Charlotte this year–is an endurance test for hot rods and muscle cars of all stripes, covering seven states and more than 1,500 miles before ending in Wisconsin.

Actually driving a Mustang seems like an appropriate way to celebrate this iconic car’s 50th anniversary, but Ford has some pretty big events of its own lined up.

It will place a Mustang on top of the Empire State Building this week–replicating a stunt from 50 years ago–and host simultaneous week-long events at the aforementioned Charlotte Motor Speedway and Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Ferrari’s 458 Replacement To Be Turbocharged

    Ferrari 458 replacement
Ferrari has started work on the replacement for the 458 Italia, with the hardcore Speciale unveiled at the 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show thought to be the final version of the 458 and possibly the last of the automaker’s cars to be powered by a naturally aspirated V-8.
Yes, Ferrari’s 458 replacement is expected to adopt a twin-turbocharged engine, possibly with a V-6 configuration. The move is in response to tougher fuel economy and emissions regulations, but also due to competition from McLaren’s latest 650S and previous 12C, which have proven to be more formidable on the track than Ferrari’s 458 Italia and 458 Speciale (the McLarens’ twin-turbo V-8 mills are notorious for producing prodigious amounts of low-end torque).DON’T MISS: Teen Drives Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Into Texas Pool: Video

A test mule for Ferrari’s 458 replacement was spotted in northern Europe recently, but this was still in the very early stages of development. It is likely being used to calibrate traction and stability systems; the mule was first spotted driving on a frozen lake.

Ferrari 458 Speciale, 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show

The new car it will eventually spawn won’t be a direct replacement for the 458 but rather a substantial update, meaning a common chassis. Ferrari did the same with the California’s transformation into the California T, and we saw something similar with the 458 Italia’s predecessor, the F430, which shared its chassis with its own predecessor, the 360 Modena.

With the 458 first hitting the scene in 2009, it’s likely we’ll see its replacement late next year.

The ONLY Black Maserati MC12 In The World Up For Sale

    Black Maserati MC12

The Maserati MC12 is essentially a Ferrari Enzo that went to finishing school. For some that’s a great thing, while others prefer the rawness of the Enzo. Either school of thought is in luck, because there are no wrong answers here and both cars are exceptional. Still, the MC12 is far more rare than the Enzo seeing as just 50 were produced compared to the nearly 400 Enzo examples originally churned out. Though if people keep crashing them, the Enzo could catch up in the rare department.

MUST SEE: Drifting Mustang Cop Car Versus Drifting Bikes, We All Win: Video

It’s understandable then that you all should be excited when a MC12 comes up for sale. There happens to be one at this very moment sitting in the showroom at Ferrari of Newport Beach. It gets more interesting, however, because this one is finished in Tuxedo Black… and it’s the only one of the 50-car run to wear this paint scheme. The rest were all done in blue and white.

This particular MC12 is street legal in 49 of the 50 states, with California being the only lame duck. Odd then that the car should be sitting for sale in California. Oh well, if we could afford the has-to-be-seven-figured price tag, we’d drive it anyway. You can run a car with no plates in California for an extended period of time, and this one wouldn’t cause the batting of an eye with a paper tag on the back.

The New Porsche Boxster GTS Looks Great, Sounds Even Better (VIDEO)

    The new Boxster GTS

The Porsche Boxster is an undeniably great sports car. It was so good when it was introduced in all-new 981 form that we named it our 2013 Best Car To Buy. For the 2014 model year it’s getting even better with the addition of the GTS model.

MUST SEE: Size Matters 2: The Jumping/Drifting Semi Truck Is Back At Work In New Video

An extra 15 horsepower and 7 pound-feet of torque over the Boxster S bring the new totals to 330 horsepower and 274 pound-feet of torque from the 3.4-liter flat-six engine. But the upgrades don’t stop there: Sport Chrono and Porsche Active Suspension Management are standard, as is a six-speed manual transmission–though the fantastic PDK dual-clutch is available as an option.

    2014-Porsche-Boxster-GTS

Darker wheels, redesigned front and rear bumpers, bi-xenon headlights with dark surrounds, black-tipped exhaust outlets, and black lettering offer exterior visual cues that mark the GTS apart from the rest of the Boxster line; inside, Alcantara and leather trim and standard sport seats improve the atmosphere.

Porsche Boxster and Cayman GTS Revealed (PHOTOS)

    2014-porsche-boxster

The latest Porsche Boxster and Cayman are two of the most capable sports cars on the planet. In fact, both have been voted Motor Authority’s Best Car To Buy in recent years. However, never one to rest on its laurels, Porsche has now enhanced both cars by launching more potent ‘GTS’ versions.

Porsche’s GTS models are aimed at buyers after something sportier than the regular S models, and typically feature more power under the hood, unique styling treatments and a number of extras in the cabin. Short for Gran Turismo Sport, Porsche first applied the GTS badge on its legendary 904 Carrera GTS in 1963. Since then the appellation has been used for a handful of models including the 924 GTS and 928 GTS of the 1980s and ‘90s, and in more recent times for the previous 997-series 911 and the latest Cayenne and Panamera.

MUST WATCH: World’s Longest Car Jump Attempt Ends In Fierce Crash: Video

Both the Boxster GTS and Cayman GTS feature the 3.4-liter flat-six engine from the respective S models, and here it’s been tuned to deliver an additional 15 horsepower and 7 pound-feet of torque for both. This means the Boxster GTS is delivering 330 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque, while the Cayman GTS is good for 340 hp and 280 lb-ft.

Further emphasizing the distinctive character of the GTS models is the addition of Porsche’s Sport Chrono package and Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) as standard. These offer the driver the opportunity to not only modify the damper stiffness, but also subtly change the throttle characteristics of the engine. The Sport Chrono package also includes dynamic engine mounts, which stiffen automatically under acceleration, cornering or braking in order to reduce the effects of mass transfer during dynamic maneuvers, thus helping to improve agility. An optional sports chassis setup can also be fitted, which lowers the car by 20 millimeters.

A six-speed manual is standard on both, but the Porsche PDK dual-clutch transmission is the quicker option here. With the latter equipped and Launch Control activated, the Boxster GTS will sprint to 60 mph from rest in just 4.4 seconds. The Cayman GTS, meanwhile, needs just 4.3 seconds to achieve the same feat. Top speed for the Boxster GTS is 174 mph with the manual, and 177 mph for the Cayman GTS, also with a manual. No top speed figures for cars with the PDK have been given.

ALSO SEE: Drag Racer Makes Awesome Save When 250-MPH Car’s Chutes Fail: Video

Onlookers will able to recognize the GTS models by their darkened wheels, which measure 20 inches across. The cars also feature bi-xenon headlights with darkened surrounds, new bumpers at both ends, a sport exhaust with black tips, and black lettering. For the cabin, the GTS models get sports seats, leather trim and Alcantara accents.

The Porsche Boxster GTS and Cayman GTS will likely be shown to the public for the first time at April’s 2014 New York Auto Show as sales are scheduled to commence this summer. Pricing for the Boxster GTS is set at $74,495, and comes in at $76,195 for the Cayman GTS. Both prices include a $995 destination charge.

Fierce Crash Ends World’s Longest Car Jump Attempt (VIDEO)

World's Longest Car Jump Attempt Ends in Crash

French daredevil driver, skier, and rally racer Guerlain Chicherit’s Guinness World Record jump attempt was promoted all around the world last week. Chicherit was aiming to surpass Tanner Foust’s 332-foot record with a 360-foot jump in a modified MINI Countryman rally car.

The jump, which took place this past Sunday, March 16, started well enough, with plenty of distance to clear the enormous gap. But the landing didn’t go so smoothly.

MUST WATCH: Drag Racer Makes Awesome Save When 250-MPH Car’s Chutes Fail: Video

Toward the end of Chicherit’s flight, the MINI nosed down sharply, landing almost perpendicular to the ramp and cartwheeling down to a stop, resting on its side.

The wreck looks scary–and almost certainly was from Chicherit’s perspective–but fortunately he emerged from the MINI under his own power and has since been cleared by a precautionary MRI. He’s fine, apart from a few minor injuries.

Though the jump record attempt failed, Chicherit has already logged the world’s first “unassisted” car backflip–in another modified MINI rally car.

    Ultra-Rare AMG Mercedes-Benz 300SL Up For Sale

    1954-mercedes-benz-300sl-amg

Mercedes-Benz’s in-house tuner AMG was only established in 1967 but the company has built a handful of original 300SLs in the past, including this 1954 gullwing. As the story goes, Brunei’s car crazy Sultan asked AMG if it could it take an original 300SL gulling coupe and 300SL roadster and fit them both with modern internals.

As drastic as it sounds, there was apparently enough demand that nine other examples were built (other buyers are believed to be from the Brunei royal family). So between 1996 and 2009, AMG took 11 original 300SLs–eight coupes and three roadsters–and did a restomod on them. They were then sold for a price of more than a million euros ($1.39 million at current exchange rates) each.

Now, one of the cars is up for sale. It’s a 1954 example with chassis number 198040. It will be going under the hammer at an RM Auctions event in Monaco in early May.

The chassis and body are original but most of the rest of the car is new. Instead of the original straight-six, it’s powered by a 6.0-liter V-8 rated at 380 horsepower and 427 pound-feet of torque. The 300SL’s original swing-arm rear suspension has also made way for a modern five-link setup, and also added to the mix were Bilstein shocks and AMG light alloys. Power steering, disc brakes and a four-speedautomatic transmission have also been added.

The interior is almost completely new and features a mixture of Nappa leather and Alcantara trim. As the shots reveal, the car also gets a HWA steering wheel, a Sony CD changer and carbon fiber protective panels. Other subtle interior touches include a steering-column lock for heightened security, as well as a complete set of original 300SL instruments which were adapted to modern comfort and electronic operation.

No estimate has been given but another of the AMG-modified 300SLs went up for auction in 2009 and sold for £462,000 ($767,460). That’s comparable with the price of an unmolested example so it will be interesting to see what this one will go for given the current mania in rare classics.

Other special cars to look out for during the RM Auction in Monaco, which gets underway May 10, include a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTE, 1969 Lamborghini Miura P400S, 1985 Porsche 959 prototype, and Ferrari and Brabham Formula One cars from 1989 and 1966, respectively.

The Camaro Z/28 Is So Fast, It Outran Its Own Tires (VIDEO)

    2014-chevrolet-camaro-z-28

It’s well known that the Chevy Camaro Z/28 has the widest front tires of any production car. At 305 mm wide, those tires produce tremendous grip–especially since they’re Pirelli P Zero Trofeo Rs. In fact, they make so much grip, the Z/28 was spinning the tire around the wheel under braking–the Z/28 was, in effect, outrunning its tires, or at least their ability to grip the wheels.

MUST SEE: Turbo GMC Sierra Kills Ferrari 458 Italia In Street Race: Video

It’s an unusual problem for a production car, but it’s a good one to have–too much grip is just enough.

Part of the cause also comes down to the Brembo carbon ceramic brakes, which provide tremendous stopping power for the large but track-worthy Z/28. But regardless of the cause, Chevy had to find a fix for the tire-on-wheel slippage issue.

If Chevy hadn’t found a solution to the problem, it could have resulted in the wheel/tire package going out of balance–like the wheels they’re mounted on, tires aren’t perfectly uniform around their circumference. That’s why the wheel/tire package is balanced as a unit.

    2014-chevrolet-camaro-z-28-first-ride_100443220_l

    DON’T MISS: Awesome 1/4 Scale V-8 Powered 1934 Ford R/C Car: Video

Typically, Chevy says the tire-wheel slippage issue is solved through the use of an abrasive paint along the bead of the wheel, where the tire seats. The Z/28 team tried this, and found it wasn’t enough to prevent the problem.

So they took it to the next level, using a racing solution: they media-blasted the rim of each wheel. That finally produced enough friction to keep the Z/28 from spinning the rubber around the metal.

    2014-chevrolet-camaro-z-28-first-ride_100443223_l

Like the Flowtie, and the Flying Car Mode, this is just another small but significant piece of engineering that makes us appreciate the Z/28 that much more.

Porsche 911 GT3 Rear Steering Demonstrated (VIDEO)

    2014 Porsche GT3

It’s one thing to know your super high-tech new street/track toy can steer its rear wheels to improve maneuverability at slow speeds, or increase stability at high speeds. But it’s another thing to actually see that steering process in motion–after all, you’re usually in the car driving it when it happens.

Fortunately, there’s this video from Elephant Racing, which demonstrates just how the rear-steering system on Porsche’s newest 911 GT3 works. You’ll see the actuation rod that does the actual rear-wheel steering, how the movement is handled by bushing compliance in the other rear suspension components, and what it looks like with the wheel both on and off.

It’s a simple thing, really, but also amazingly complex in its interaction with the driver’s inputs. Having experienced the same steering system in the new Porsche 911 Turbo for ourselves, it’s also almost completely transparent to the driver; it’s something that just happens, and is only somewhat noticeable at parking lot speeds.

For the full details on the new Porsche 911 GT3, check out our preview here.

Geneva 2014: McLaren 650S Spider Drops Its Top (VIDEO)

    mclaren-650s-spider_revealed

As if the launch of the McLaren 650S at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show wasn’t enough, the crew from Woking brought along a convertible Spider version. The 650S’ P1-inspired styling is made all the more dramatic with a removable roof.

DON’T MISS: 1,340-Horsepower Koenigsegg One:1 Supercar: Live From Geneva

As with the MP4-12C Spider with which it shares a platform, the 650S Spider features a retractable hardtop that effectively makes it a coupe with the roof fitted. The roof takes 17 seconds to raise, a task that can be accomplished at speeds up to 19 mph.

McLaren says the car’s carbon fiber MonoCell chassis did not require any additional strengthening, despite the removal of the roof. The weight penalty over the coupe is about 88 pounds. The 650S Spider comes equipped with the coupe’s lightweight alloy wheels, Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires, and carbon ceramic brakes.

Also unchanged is the 12C-derived 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged V-8, which produces the same 641 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque it does in the 650S hardtop. That allows the 650S Spider to do 0-62 mph in 3.0 seconds, 0-124 mph in 8.6 seconds, and reach a top speed of 204 mph.

That’s 0.1 second, 0.2 second, and 3 mph behind the coupe, respectively. It doesn’t look like convertible buyers will sacrifice much in the way of performance.

MUST SEE: Fifth And Final Pagani Zonda Revolucion: 2014 Geneva Motor Show Live Photos

McLaren says the 650S Spider will also return the same 24.2mpg on the European combined cycle as the coupe. That number will be significantly lower in U.S. EPA testing, though.

There’s also no shortage of convenience features in the Alcantara-trimmed cabin. The 650S Spider comes standard with Bluetooth, IRIS satellite navigation, SIRIUS satellite radio, and voice controls.

    Sales begin later this year.

The Koenigsegg One:1 Hypercar Is 1,340HP Of Pure Awesomeness

    Koenigsegg One:1

Attention One-Percenters, your latest ultra-exotic, limited-edition hypercar is finally here, revealed in full ahead of a debut at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show. It’s called the Koenigsegg One:1, and it should be an insane road-going time machine that transports you to future sections of roads in the blink of an eye. We first brought you details on the One:1 as far back as November 2012. Since then there have been plenty of rumors but now we have the definitive details on the world’s newest supercar.

ALSO SEE: McLaren 650S Performance: 10.5 In The Quarter-Mile, 0-60 MPH In Under 3 Seconds

Marking 20 years since the formation of the Koenigsegg skunk works in Sweden, the One:1 is very much a Koenigsegg product, one based on the Agera line of supercars recently launched in the U.S.. However, numerous upgrades mean it’s virtually an all-new car.

The car gets its name from the fact that it produces one horsepower for every kilogram of weight. Koenigsegg calls it the world’s first production ‘Megawatt’ car, because of its 1,000-kilowatt power rating. For readers in the U.S., that translates to about 1,340 horsepower, which means, you guessed it, the car weighs just 1,340 kilograms (2,954 pounds)–taking into account all necessary fluids and even the weight of an average size driver. This was achieved via a 20 percent lighter chassis and body compared to the Agera, made using advanced carbon fiber.

By comparison, the world’s fastest production car, the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport (according to Guinness) develops only 1,183 horsepower and weighs more than 4,000 pounds. Performance, as you would expect given the insane power to weight ratio of the One:1, will be nothing short of amazing. Koenigsegg is confident the car will set new acceleration records for 0-200 km/h (0-124 mph), 0-300 km/h (0-186 mph) and even 0-400 km/h (0-248 mph) sprints. The latter could be as quick as 20 seconds.

    Koenigsegg One:1

As for top speed, Koenigsegg says that’s not a priority for the One:1, since it is a track-focused car. However, the company is confident the One:1 could eclipse the Veyron Super Sport’s 267.8 mph speed record and go on to pass 273 mph!

DON’T MISS: The Stress Of Loading A $4.1 Million Lamborghini Veneno Onto A Truck Will Kill You: Video

But if you’re thinking the One:1 won’t be able to handle corners like its Ferrari LaFerrari and McLaren P1 rivals, then you’d be wrong. The vehicle is capable of developing up to 2 g of cornering force and at speeds in excess of 160 mph its trick aerodynamics allows it to produce 1,344 pounds of downforce, which is comparable with the P1. The aero setup is fully active and consists of independent left and right front flaps under the front splitter and hydraulically-actuated rear wing.

The engine fitted to the One:1 is Koenigsegg’s own twin-turbocharged 5.0-liter V-8 design. It uses variable geometry turbochargers also designed by Koenigsegg and whose housing is constructed using a 3D printing process. The exhaust, a titanium setup, is also 3D printed. Drive goes to the rear wheels only, via a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox that was also designed by Koenigsegg.

In the cabin, things are equally advanced. There is an active chassis system that can adjust the ride height and shock absorbing level based on data collected from 3G and GPS services. Koenigsegg says the setup is even effective when at the track. The seats, meanwhile, are carbon fiber and feature memory foam.

Only six examples will be built, and all of them have been been pre-sold. Not like it matters now, but the going price is believed to be around $2 million.

Christian von KoenigseggOn August 12 of this year, Koenigsegg officially turns 20. For those unfamiliar with Koenigsegg, the company was founded by Swede Christian von Koenigsegg. He was just 22 when he started the company, setting out with an idea to create a sports carthat was like nothing in existence, and that would be desired.

The concept, which remains to this day, was for a lightweight mid-engined car with a detachable, stowable roof. It also had to have a wraparound screen for good visibility and aerodynamics. Finally, it had to have a timeless and efficient appearance that would age like good wine, and so it has, since Koenigsegg’s first car, the CC8S, right up to the latest One:1.

The Lamborghini Huracán configurator is here for fill all your supercar fantasies

    lamborghini-huracn-lp-610-4-configurator

The Lamborghini Huracán LP 610-4 is just days away from its debut at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show but the car has already been presented to potential customers where it managed to rack up 700 orders in just one month. Even if you have little chance of affording its six-figure pricetag, you can still pretend that you’re one of those potential buyers by loading up Lamborghini’s new online configurator for the Huracán.

    Lamborghini Huracán configurator

Here, you can get all the vital stats as well as play around with the color options (pictured above is the Huracán in Verde Mantis). You can then choose a particular wheel pattern and the color of the brake calipers to finalize the car’s exterior look.

MUST WATCH: The Stress Of Loading A $4.1 Million Lamborghini Veneno Onto A Truck Will Kill You: Video

Then it’s time to move on to the interior where you can fiddle with items such as the color of the trim, the type of steering wheel and whether or not you want Lamborghini’s logo emblazoned on the seats.

Once complete, if you are in the position to buy the Huracán, now would be the time to contact your local Lambo dealer and place your order. Given the popularity of the car thus far, wait times may be long.

Future owners have a lot to look forward to, though, as the Huracán LP 610-4 comes with a 601-horsepower version of the 5.2-liter V-10 fitted to the outgoing Gallardo. In the Huracán, the engine is paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission which Lamborghini calls a “Doppia Frizione”. The 0-62 mph sprint will take just 3.2 seconds and top speed is said to be around 202 mph.

Full pricing and availability for the U.S. market will be announced later in the year.

Mazzanti Evantra 701HP Supercar Debuts (VIDEO)

From the creator of the V-12 powered Vulca S and the deliciously retro Antas V8 GT comes a brand new supercar, the Evantra. The company behind the car is Mazzanti, an Italian coachbuilder formerly known as Faralli and Mazzanti, whose CEO and founder Luca Mazzanti explains in the video above how the project was born.

We first caught wind of the Evantra in early 2011, back when it was called the Mugello. At the time it was touted as being the first sports car to hail from Mazzanti with a mid-engine layout. A year later it was promised to come with a flat-six engine delivering upwards of 600 horsepower.

MUST SEE: Watch This 1,029-Horsepower Honda Odyssey Minivan Roast Its Tires

In its final specification, the Evantra comes powered by a 7.0-liter V-8 engine, mounted in a mid-engine position and tuned to deliver 701 horsepower and 625 pound-feet of torque. Drive is sent to the rear wheels via a six-speed sequential gearbox with paddle shifters.

The engine, which is mostly aluminum, benefits from dry-sump lubrication as well as valves and connected rods made from titanium, and it should be able to accelerate the Evantra from 0-60 mph in around 3.0 seconds and see it reach a top speed of 217 mph.

The Evantra also gets a chrome-molybdenum chassis and aerodynamic body designed in collaboration with motorsports and engineering firm YSIM. Thanks to lightweight construction (the customer has the choice of a carbon fiber or aluminum body), the overall weight of the car comes in at just under 3,000 pounds.

Other performance specs include 20-inch OZ wheels shod with Continental tires, Brembo brakes with six-piston calipers up front and four-piston units in the rear, optional carbon-ceramic discs, and electronic adjustment of the engine and gearbox with settings ranging from Strada to Corsa.

Inside, Mazzanti offers the full luxury experience, with leather and carbon fiber trim on most surfaces. Mazzanti likes to stress that almost every aspect of the car can be personalized, especially its interior. One key feature is the roof-mounted starter button, which is the same design found in the original Antas V8.

Production of the Evantra is now underway at Mazzanti’s ‘atelier’ in the Italian province of Pisa.

Aston Martin DB9 Announces New Carbon Special Editions (VIDEO)

In addition to its new V8 Vantage N430, Aston Martin will be showing off a pair of DB9 special editions at the upcoming 2014 Geneva Motor Show. The latest special editions revive Aston Martin’s ‘Carbon’ theme, which was last used on the DB9 back in 2010, prior to the car’s transformation into the Aston Martin formerly known as the Virage.

This time around there is both a DB9 Carbon Black and a DB9 Carbon White. Rather than outright performance, style and what Aston Martin describes as “visual drama” are the hallmarks of the new special editions.

Both cars feature carbon fiber elements for the exterior and cabin. Items include carbon side strakes and darkened window surrounds as well as bright red brake calipers.

For the interior, Aston designers have gone with a black theme for both, but with contrasting red elements to match the brake calipers. The cars also feature bespoke sill plaques with the Carbon Black or Carbon White logo.

No changes have been made to the powertrain, which means the cars still come with a 6.0-liter V-12 engine delivering 510 horsepower and 457 pound-feet of torque. In case you were wondering, that will get you to a top speed of 183 mph.

Twin Turbo Hennessey HPE700 Corvette Stingray (PHOTOS)

    Hennessey HPE700 Corvette Stingray

With the twin-turbocharged HPE700, Hennessey says it’s turned “America’s sportscar” into America’s supercar. Looking at the specifications, it’s hard to argue with that claim.

The 6.2-liter LT1 V-8 is aided by the aforementioned pair of turbines (a supercharged version is also available), plus an upgraded fuel system, re-tuned ECU, and other modifications. The result is 708 horsepower and 661 pound-feet of torque, besting even the new Corvette Z06.

DON’T MISS: Would-Be Porsche Thief Foiled By Locked Doors

That monster motor is available with both of the stock Corvette Stingray’s transmissions: a seven-speed manual or a six-speed automatic. With the optional 20-inch drag radial tires, Hennessey says the HPE700 will do 0 to 60 mph in a very supercar-like 2.9 seconds, and cover the quarter mile in 10.5 seconds at 135.4 mph. It’s also pretty darn good at doing burnouts.

A less-powerful HPE600 has already been clocked at 200.6 mph on a stretch of Texas toll road, but Hennessey hasn’t had a chance to take the HPE700 to terminal velocity yet. The company estimates that it will exceed 210 mph.

To keep the car from taking off at those speeds, Hennessey equips the HPE700 with a carbon fiber front spoiler, rear-lip spoiler, and side sills to provide extra downforce. They also help improve the Corvette Stingray’s already-fantastic looks.

All of that performance comes with a price tag of $120,000, including the cost of a Corvette Stingray Z51 with the 3LT option group. However, if a 700 hp C7 Corvette seems too conservative, Hennessey has other Stingray upgrade options.

From the HPE700, buyers can upgrade to the 800-hp HPE800 or the HPE1000 which has–you guessed it–a Bugatti Veyron-rivaling 1,000 hp.

Turbo Power: Meet The New Turbocharged Ferrari California T (VIDEO)

Ferrari has revealed its new, turbocharged California, the California T, which debuts next month at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show and sees the Prancing Horse return to turbocharged power for the first time since the legendary F40 supercar of the 1980s. Yes, 2014 marks a new era for Ferrari, both on and off the track, and that era is one focused on efficiency as well as performance.

Ferrari has dropped hints about a return to turbocharged power for its road cars for several years now, explaining in the past that such a move was inevitable in a world of stricter emissions and fuel consumption regulations. And as we’ve seen with the LaFerrari hybrid, Ferrari has ruled out nothing in terms of technology as it works to keep high-performance a priority while reducing fuel consumption simultaneously.

    ferrari-california_turbocharged_engine
Ferrari hasn’t released full details on its new California T but the automaker has confirmed the car’s engine delivers 552 horsepower and a massive 556 pound-feet of torque. Better still, Ferrari says the engine has a torque curve that increases constantly across the rev range and delivers a soundtrack of an intensity never before achieved by a turbocharged mill.

The engine is an upgraded version of the twin-turbocharged 3.8-liter V-8 used in the Maserati Quattroporte, which is actually built at Ferrari’s engine plant in Maranello. Compared to the former California’s naturally-aspirated 4.3-liter V-8, the engine in the California T is delivering 49 percent more torque but is using around 15 percent less fuel. EPA fuel economy will be released closer to the sales launch later this year.

Owners can expect 0-62 mph acceleration in 3.6 seconds and a top speed in excess of 195 mph. Stopping power comes from carbon ceramic brakes while aiding the handling are new springs and dampers. The car is still rather heavy, unfortunately, with the dry weight coming in at more than 3,500 pounds.

    ferrari-california_t

Rather than being a completely new model, the California T is an update of the current California, or “modificato” as they say in Italy. The retractable hard-top roof remains but the styling has been refined for the front and rear sections of the car, incorporating a mix of classic and modern touches.

The headlights are clearly influenced by the units on other contemporary Ferraris while the side, for example, gets the legendary 250 Testa Rossa’s famous pontoon-fender styling. Thankfully, the ugly exhaust tips and plastic decoration of the former California are now gone, replaced by a much more elegant solution. The cabin has also been modernized, with the key feature being a new infotainment system with a 6.5-inch touchscreen display. The 2+2 seating configuration has been retained, though.

Stay tuned for the full reveal of the Ferrari California T at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show on March 4.

Roger Penske Pays Record Sum For Lamborghini Aventador In The Name Of Charity

Roger Penske Pays Record Sum For Lamborghini Aventador In The Name Of Charity

Motorsport icon and businessman Roger Penske has paid the highest sum ever for a Lamborghini Aventador Roadster, after placing the winning bid on one at a recent charity auction benefiting the Naples Children and Education Foundation. Penske’s winning bid was an impressive $900,000, which is roughly double the asking price for one the stunning roadsters.

But this was no ordinary Aventador Roadster; it was one of the limited editionAventador LP 720-4 Roadster 50° Anniversario models that Lamborghini announced last year as part of its 50th anniversary celebrations.

As its name suggests, the Anniversario model’s 6.5-liter V-12 has been uprated to 720 metric horsepower (710 regular horsepower) from the standard model’s 700 metric horsepower (691 horsepower), and drive is still sent to all four wheels. Only 100 examples are being built in total–50 coupes and 50 roadsters.

The auction, which was held last month at the Naples Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort, was organized by local Lamborghini dealership Lamborghini Sarasota. This was the dealership’s first year assisting the Naples Children and Education Foundation and we’re sure there will be many more to come.

SRT Trio Gets The Vapors: 2014 Chicago Auto Show

The SRT brand made a (tiny) bit of news today at the Chicago Auto Show. Three of the four SRT vehicles will be offered up in new special versions dubbed the Satin Vapor editions. 2014 BMW 4-Series Gran Coupe Revealed (VIDEO)

It’s finally here: BMW’s four-door-coupe version of a coupe derived from a sedan. If that is a bit confusing, you’re thinking too hard. Just go with it.

BMW’s answer to a question no one knew to ask, the 2014 4-Series Gran Coupe puts a sleeker, trimmer look on the four-door F30–or adds a couple doors to the two-door F32, looked at from another angle. Whatever angle you approach the new 4-Series Gran Coupe from, however, you’re likely to find something worth looking at.

That’s right–to our surprise, we completely understand why BMW built this car. It’s not that the 3-Series isn’t comely enough, it’s that the 4-Series coupe’s lines translate so well to the four-door format. The result is a strikingly good-looking car that commands attention just as it defies categorization.

    2014 BMW 4-Series Gran Coupe

Inside you’ll find the familiar design and equipment shared with the 3-Series sedan and 4-Series coupe.

The only real difference is in the back seat, where slightly snugger, more bucket-like seats and handy 40:20:40 split-folding seatbacks combine utility and style–with perhaps a bit less headroom than you’d find in a true sedan.

Like its two-door 4-Series coupe counterparts, the 2014 BMW 4-Series Gran Coupe will be available in both 428i and 435i specifications. The 428i gets BMW’s 2.0-liter, 240-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine, while the 435i uses the 300-horsepower, 3.0-liter turbocharged in-line six. At launch, the 428i Gran Coupe will also be available with xDrive all-wheel drive. An eight-speed automatic transmission is the sole option on all U.S.-market models, with standard manual-mode paddle shifters and several shift modes selectable via the Driving Dynamics Control in the center console.

BMW says the 428i Gran Coupe will hit 60 mph in 5.7 seconds and achieve gas mileage ratings of 23 mpg city, 35 mpg highway, and 27 mpg combined. The more powerful 435i Gran Coupe runs to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds, and is expected to rate 22 mpg city, 32 mpg highway, and 25 mpg combined.

    2014 BMW 4-Series Gran Coupe

Though you’d think BMW would have to lengthen the 4-Series coupe to add the extra doors, the 4-Series Gran Coupe shares its overall length, wheelbase, and track width with the coupe.

The only exterior dimensional changes are a roof that’s 4.4-inches longer, and 0.5-inches higher for greater rear-seat headroom.

Features, options, and trim lines closely mirror the 4-Series coupe range, with Sport Line, Luxury Line, and M Sport packages available to customize the look and feel of the car.

    2014 BMW 4-Series Gran Coupe

The 2014 BMW 4-Series Gran Coupe will make its global debut at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show next month, followed by a U.S. debut at the 2014 New York Auto Show. Pricing starts at $41,225 (all prices include destination) for the 428i Gran Coupe; the 428i xDrive Gran Coupe starts from $43,225; and the 435i Gran Coupe will run at least $46,725. Retail sales will start in early summer 2014.

Red Bull Unveil The RB10 – Will It Take Them To A Fifth Straight F1 Title? (VIDEO)

Infiniti Red Bull Racing, the last of the top teams to reveal its new race car for the 2014 Formula One World Championship, has finally pulled off the covers. The car is the RB10, aptly named since it’s Red Bull’s 10th season in F1, and it’s the one Sebastian Vettel will be hoping to win his fifth title in. Joining him will be former Toro Rosso driver Daniel Ricciardo, who replaces his Australian compatriot Mark Webber this season.

Red Bull Racing’s RB10 2014 Formula One car

In line with the new aerodynamic regulations, the RB10 sports a nose design not seen on previous cars from Red Bull. It’s also very different to any design we’ve seen from other teams. Other standout elements of the RB10 include the new side pods and multi-tiered front wings.

Peak output of about 750 horsepower will come once again from a Renault power unit, which like competitor designs features a turbocharged 1.6-liter V-6 engine paired with an Energy Recovery System. The ERS provides an electric boost to the engine and consists of not one but two electric motor-generators: one either helping drive the car or topping up the batteries, and the second either helping spool up the turbo or also topping up the batteries.

Red Bull Racing’s RB10 2014 Formula One car

Sebastian Vettel and Daniel Ricciardo took the RB10 for its first public outing at official F1 testing in Jerez, Spain today. Vettel is aiming for his fifth consecutive Drivers’ title while his Red Bull team is aiming for its fifth consecutive Constructors’ title. The first race of the new season will be the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne in mid-March.

Red Bull remains based in Milton Keynes, England and is run by Christian Horner who serves as team principal. Chief technical officer is Adrian Newey.

Below are some of the other 2014 F1 cars to have been revealed:

    Mercedes AMG W05
    Ferrari F14 T

    Force India VJM07

Audi Reveals Doberhuahua-Themed Super Bowl Ad For The 2015 A3 (VIDEO)

    Audi A3 Dog Superbowl Commercial

What does the 2015 Audi A3 have to do with a dog? They both star in Audi’s new ad for the Super Bowl taking place next week. We’re not talking any old dog, though. The dog featuring in Audi’s ad is a Doberhuahua, a mixture of a Doberman and a Chihuahua.

The Doberhuahua is the result of a couple wanting two different dogs and compromising on one dog with the combined features of the other two. In case you haven’t figured it out yet, Audi wants to portray to buyers of its new A3 that they won’t have to compromise on anything.

While the ad portrays the Doberhuahua as a little scary, there’s nothing overly ferocious about the A3’s base 1.8-liter TFSI turbocharged four-cylinder engine–which produces 170 horsepower and 200 pound-feet of torque–or the optional 2.0-liter version with 220 hp and 258 lb-ft. Both engines comes with a six-speed S-tronic dual-clutch automatic transmission, and Audi’s quattro all-wheel drive system is standard.

The base price of $30,795 (including destination), isn’t too scary either. That puts the A3 in the ring with the similarly-sized Mercedes-Benz CLA250, which was the star of its own Super Bowl commercial last year.

On television screens, Audi will compete with Volkswagen and Jaguar, which has drafted its own team of “British Villains” to ensure commercial domination. Oh, and apparently some people will be playing a game of football while all this is going on.

The Big Game kicks off February 2 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. Be glad you won’t have to endure the likely cold temperatures, or the post-game traffic.

For the latest episode of Jay Leno’s Garage, Tim Allen stopped by with his customized 1968 Camaro.

Inspired by a green ’68 Allen used to see racing up and down Detroit’s Woodward Avenue, many subtle modifications and details cribbed from some legendary Camaro models.

Painted in the same shade as Allen’s teenage fascination, the Camaro wears COPO badges. While it’s not one of the original (and now extremely rare) COPO cars, it does feature a similarly monstrous “small-block” 427-cubic-inch V-8. It also has the hunkered-down stance of a Trans-Am racer. Think of it as a tribute to both cars.

Yet at first glance, it looks remarkably stock, as Allen didn’t want to go too crazy with changes. The integrated fender flares and deleted drip rails give the car a muscular yet classy look, while the custom 17-inch Rally wheels keep things looking stock, but conceal upgraded Brembo disc brakes.

The engine bay got a similar remake. Allen said he wanted the swap to look like something that came right out of the Chevy factory, but also wanted to clean things up to properly show off that 427.

This Camaro can still smoke its tires like any other ’60s muscle car, but upgrades to the structure and suspension give it the solidity and handling of a modern car, something Jay seemed very impressed with during the drive.

    2014 BMW M235i First Drive

    2014 BMW M235i First Drive
There are a lot of reasons to moan about the current state of BMW’s cars, including a couple of the porkier M vehicles. But the new 2014 M235i isn’t one of them. It’s the opposite.

This, friends, is what the F30 should have been, at least as far as the balance between poise, ride, dynamics, and feel goes. It’s just an incredibly well-sorted little sports coupe. As BMW’s introduction of the M Performance line to the U.S., it’s a great start.

That’s not to say a few areas couldn’t be sharpened up (ahem, steering) or tightened up (there’s still a fair bit of body roll), but the knife’s edge cuts both ways when tuning a car, and BMW has chosen a remarkably equitable splitting point.

And that’s before you notice just how much better the new M235i looks. Gone are the rather awkward curves around the rear of the roof line, the drawn-in sides, the sucked-in cheeks. The M235i wears its look honestly, and it comes off just about perfect in person.

    Powertrain & Chassis

Under the hood you’ll find the familiar N55 in-line six-cylinder turbocharged engine. In M235i guise it’s good for a solid 320 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque. That’s plenty for a street car, and it feels like it’s every bit as stout as its rating from behind the wheel–even when matched to the eight-speed automatic transmission, as all of the test vehicles were for the car’s global launch in and around the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

During our time with the car we got a handful of laps around the tight and short infield road course, as well as a quartet of circuits of the steeply banked oval and a few dozen miles on the road. That’s hardly enough time to judge the longer-term merits of the car, but it did give us a very good feel for its innate qualities.

    It’s really quite good.

2014 BMW M235i first drive, Las Vegas Motor Speedway

Flip into Sport+ mode and you’re rewarded with snappy shifts that aren’t quite dual-clutch quick or affirmative, but are very close; a lively throttle pedal; slightly stiffer steering feel; and a firmer ride from the M Adaptive suspension. That M Adaptive suspension is standard equipment in the U.S., as is the 13.4-inch front/11.4-inch rear M Sport Braking System, variable sport steering, and Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires.

The M Performance equipment works in harmony to produce incredible fun. It’s certainly not the fastest way around a track–there’s no real limited slip differential in base form; you’ll have to have your dealer install one as an option–but that won’t stop it from causing you to pull a pleased face or two. BMW says the M235i will scoot to 60 mph in just 4.8 seconds with the automatic gearbox and its launch control function, and we don’t doubt it–it may be a tick or two quicker in real-world use. Top speed is limited to 155 mph.

Unlike a lot of modern BMWs, the M235i doesn’t come with standard run-flat tires. That smooths out the ride considerably on the street, where even in Sport+ mode, the M235i is about as unobjectionable as a sporty coupe can be. For those accustomed to high-performance cars, it’s downright plush. On track, however, the tires introduce a few small issues–or at least we think that’s the case from our limited testing.

Softer sidewalls produce good ride characteristics, and good grip, too, as you’d expect from a Michelin Pilot Super Sport tire. But that sidewall softness also introduces a bit of a vague sense to the car’s direction changes, most noticeably through the electric power steering. Whether all of the steering’s issues come down to the tires or the EPS tuning itself, the M235i exhibits only middling levels of feel as to what the contact patch is doing against the asphalt.

2014 BMW M235i first drive, Las Vegas Motor Speedway

There’s still enough information to know when the front is about to break away, and in its stock staggered-tire format, that’s precisely the end that’s most likely to come loose first unless you intentionally ham it into oversteer. Once braked down and setup for a fast turn, the M235i settles with a very neutral feel, seemingly rotating about an axis roughly between the driver’s seat and the steering wheel–much better than the follow-the-nose dynamics in some sport coupes.

Then there’s the issue of curb weight: in U.S. spec, the M235i tips the scales at 3,535 pounds (or 3,505 with the manual gearbox). That’s pretty hefty no matter the angle you take on it, and while the car’s dynamics make it feel lighter, the laws of physics will still come into play; tires, brakes, and power all have to shift that weight around.

Bottom line here: it’s not the best sport coupe BMW could have built for the track (that might be the unreasonably affordable 60,000 euro M235i Racing), but it’s big fun on the closed circuit, and just as good on the open road, if not better.

    Interior & Features

Those who owned or test-drove the previous BMW 1-Series will remember the cave-like feeling and rather underwhelming finishes on most of the materials in the cabin. That’s somewhat remedied in the new 2-Series, with inlaid trim panels in wood-like tones, as well as a standard moonroof for all U.S. models that brightens up the black-on-black theme.

The rear seat is usable, even for taller folks, though six-footers will want to ride across town rather than across the country. Up front, there’s plenty of head, leg, shoulder, and hip room–even for a pair of occupants well over six feet (and one well over 200 pounds). The trunk is about what you’d expect: enough space for some, but not too much, gear. It’s better than a convertible, at least. In other words: Score some more points for the M235i’s practicality factor–a definite bonus for those having to sell a fun-car purchase to a significant other.

Stuck atop the dash is BMW’s wide aspect ratio iDrive screen, which measures 6.5 inches in standard U.S. form, or 8.8 inches with the optional navigation system thrown in. All of the test units we’ve seen were fitted with the 8.8-inch system, which looks like a large tablet is about half-buried in the dash. We like the look; others will find it annoying that the screen doesn’t recess into the dash when not in use. Either way, the latest version of iDrive is the best yet, and is surprisingly easy to use–for most ordinary functions, at least. If you want to be a power user, get used to digging through menu trees, just like nearly other complex infotainment system on the market.

For those who’d like to take their M235i to the next level, there are a number of driver assistance technologies available, including: High Beam Assistant, Adaptive Headlights, Parking Assistant, rear view camera, Driving Assistant, cruise control with braking function, real-time traffic information, and, of course, BMW’s extended smartphone integration and BMW Apps suite.

At the pump, BMW thinks you’ll see about 22 mpg city, 32 mpg highway, and 25 mpg combined when fitted with the eight-speed auto; the six-speed manual (a “no-cost option” for the U.S.) will run closer to 19 mpg city, 28 mpg highway, and 22 mpg combined.

    2014 BMW M235i First Drive

    The Competition

So, BMW has clearly built a very well-thought-out, well-executed little sports coupe here. But how will it take on the market?

At a starting price of $44,025–but pretty well-stocked with features and M Performance equipment to start–it’s about $4,000 less expensive than the 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG, which may be its closest natural competition, at least until the Audi S3 shows up on our shores. The Bimmer is rear-drive only, of course, and it’s down a bit on power to the 355-horse front/all-wheel-drive CLA45, but dynamically, it’s purer, even if no sharper (nor, likely, any quicker around a track) than the Benz. You can get the tail out on the M235i; the front-biased CLA45 AMG settles for neutral at best.

We’ve spent considerably more time in the Best Car To Buy-winning CLA45 AMG, however, and it has yet to wipe the permagrin from our faces. Can the 2014 BMW M235i achieve the same long-term love? We’ll have to drive it more to be sure, but the early feedback is promising.

BMW has built a real contender for the compact sport/luxury segment with the M235i, and a real value, too. For our money, this is the BMW to buy–at least until we get our hands on the M4.

2015 BMW M3 And M4 Video Preview (VIDEO)

2015 BMW M3 And M4 Video Preview (VIDEO)

2015 BMW M3 And M4 Video Preview (VIDEO)
BMW’s new 2015 M3 and M4 have been some of the most talked about cars for the past several years, and now they’ve finally landed, having made their respective debuts this week at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show. For those still in the dark, the M4 is essentially the replacement for the outgoing M3 Coupe. It’s picked up a 4 in its moniker as it’s based on the latest 4-Series model. The M3, meanwhile, is now available exclusively as a sedan.

2015 BMW M3 And M4 Video Preview (VIDEO)

Apart from one being a coupe and the other a sedan, the two cars are much the same. Both will come with a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter straight-six engine delivering 425 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque. That’s only a slight increase in power over the outgoing M3’s 414-horsepower naturally-aspirated 4.0-liter V-8, but it is a significant leap in torque considering the old V-8 was delivering only around 295 pound-feet.

The gains are apparent when you look at the quoted acceleration figures. With either the standard six-speed manual or optional seven-speed M-DCT dual-clutch, you’re looking at 0-60 mph times of 4.0 seconds or less for either the M3 or M4. And BMW is typically quite conservative with its acceleration figures. Top speed of either car has been electronically limited to 155 mph.

2015 BMW M3 And M4 Video Preview (VIDEO)

Performance in the cars is also improved significantly by weight savings. BMW says on comparably equipped models, the M3/M4 save about 176 pounds over the previous-generation M3 sedan and M3 Coupe. Most of the savings come from the use of lightweight materials for certain components, including aluminum and carbon fiber reinforced plastic.

Both cars hit showrooms later this year, as 2015 models. We’ll be driving them closer to the sales launch, at which point we’ll be able to bring you our impressions as well as the all-important pricing information.

It’s Official: The 2015 Subaru WRX STI Revealed (VIDEO)

2015 Subaru WRX STI revealedThe 2015 Subaru WRX STI is the ultimate high-performance version of the latest WRX all-wheel-drive compact sedan. It boosts the power, refines the standard all-wheel-drive system, and adds new aerodynamic design features to distinguish it from the standard WRX. The STI is really Subaru’s performance flagship, and the company is also offering a special version known as the STI Launch Edition, limited to production of 1,000 units.

For 2015, the new STI is built on a stiffer chassis and hits the road with a new wide-body design and interior upgrades that include Alcantara upholstery. What Subaru calls a “nose cone” frontal design combines the front bumper and grille into a single unit, framed by narrow headlights with LED low beams. The hood is made of aluminum to reduce weight, and its scoop feeds air to the turbo intercooler. The hood is one of many body panels and components distinct to the STI model, including the fenders, doors, quarter panels, bumpers, and rear LED taillight clusters. Front fender vents are covered with mesh screens, and the fog lights are surrounded with a pattern reminiscent of carbon fiber. The traditional STI large trunk spoiler finishes off the body.

    Screen Shot 2014-01-15 at 18.34.31

It’s the powerful engine that makes an STI, in this case an exclusive 305-horsepower turbocharged 2.5-liter flat four producing 290 pound-feet of torque at 4,000 rpm. The turbo is intercooled, and only a single transmission is offered, a reinforced six-speed manual gearbox. Power is delivered to all four wheels through a limited-slip center differential that’s electronically controlled for maximum torque transfer to individual wheels. The torque is nominally split 41 percent to the front wheels, 59 percent to the rears. Side-to-side torque is controlled by limited-slip differentials on the front and rear axles as well.

    2015 Subaru WRX STI

STI drivers have a great deal of control over the car’s performance characteristics and power delivery to the wheels.

The SI-Drive powertrain management system offers three modes through a rotary dial on the console: the standard Intelligent for normal driving conditions, Sport for sportier characteristics, and Sport Sharp for maximum power and responsiveness from the engine.

    2015 Subaru WRX

The driver also has three different settings for the AWD system that vary the locking behavior of the center differential. Automatic mode allocates the power among wheels based on standard control algorithsm; Manual mode lets the driver opt for one of six locking levels to suit a particular road condition; and a new Active Torque Vectoring mode adds braking pressure to the inside front wheel to provide more neutral cornering. Finally, the Vehicle Dynamics Control traction-control and stability system lets the driver choose how much control is applied, from Normal through to Traction–both of which engage the Active Torque Vectoring–while the Off setting removes intervention by the system altogether.

    2015 Subaru WRX STI

The STI body shell is stiffened at key locations for greater rigidity, improving the handling and roadholding. It also permits quicker steering that Subaru says was benchmarked against sports cars for responsiveness. The wheel requires just 2.5 turns lock to lock, against 2.8 in the standard WRX. Stiffer springs and a unique front suspension with aluminum lower arms are paired with 18-inch wheels fitted with standard summer performance tires.

Inside the 2015 WRX STI, the cabin is roomier and the dashboard is lower, increasing visibility through a more steeply-raked windshield with thinner pillars. Access is easier, courtesy of wider door openings and lower sills, and rear legroom rises by almost 2 inches. A larger 12-cubic-foot trunk extends into the passenger compartment when the 60/40 split rear seat back is folded down.

Chevy Corvette Stingray Named ‘North American Car Of The Year’

It’s been a clean sweep for Chevrolet in the North American Car and Truck of the Year awards event, with its 2014 Corvette Stingray sports car receiving top honors in the car category and its 2014 Silverado 1500 pickup receiving the same in the category for trucks and utilities. It is the first time Chevrolet has won both awards in the same year. The Silverado last won the truck category in 2007 while its been since 1998 since a Corvette was picked for the car category.

Finalists in the car category included the 2014 Cadillac CTS and 2014 Mazda 3, while in the truck category the 2014 Acura MDX and 2014 Jeep Cherokee were among the finalists. Some other top contenders were the 2014 BMW 4-Series and X5, 2015 Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class, and the 2014 Land Rover Range Rover Sport. Last year’s winners were the Cadillac ATS and Ram 1500.

The announcement of the winners this morning at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show ends weeks of diligent testing of all the nominated vehicles by a panel of 49 judges comprised of automotive journalists from the U.S. and Canada. Among them was our own Marty Padgett.

The judges base their vote on a number of factors including innovation, design, safety, handling, driver satisfaction and value, and to be eligible a vehicle must be completely new or substantially changed from the previous model year. For the car category, the judges gave the Corvette Stingray 211 points; the Mazda 3 got 185 and the Cadillac CTS 94. For the truck category, they gave the Silverado 219 points; the Jeep Cherokee 174 and the Acura MDX 97.

2015 Lexus RC F Coupe Revealed Before Detroit Auto Show (PHOTOS)

The 2015 Lexus RC F Coupe is officially here, and it’s a looker, to be sure. But does it have the chops to back up its sporty appearance?

Perhaps the best implementation of Lexus’ avant garde “spindle grille” yet, the RC F’s nose announces its presence from miles away. Sharp, angular lights and vents cast in curving, complex surfaces wrap around to the flowing, aerodynamically sculpted fenders and sides. The wide, flared rear fenders catch the falling arch of the roofline as they both meet at the rear bumper, itself faceted and featured to mirror the nose.

Inside, the new RC F Coupe is rather standard Lexus, though perked up a bit. Looking quite a lot like the IS sedan’s dash and console, the RC F’s main cabin interfaces are straightforward, clean, and modern, if rather stark. At the least, it should prove familiar and easy to use–two things we’re never opposed to in a car built for speed.

As to whether the RC F’s performance chops will match is design aesthetic, it’s not yet clear; Lexus hasn’t graced us with the full details just yet. Full power, performance, and equipment details will have to wait for the car’s official public unveiling at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show on January 14.

    2015 Lexus RC F

Lexus has revealed that an optional active rear spoiler will be offered, deploying at speeds above 50 mph, then retracting when speeds fall below 25 mph. Lexus says the spoiler improves high-speed stability. The only other performance-related detail: three sets of 19-inch wheels will be offered, all forged aluminum.

We do, however, have some expectations for the RC F’s capabilities.

As the successor, in spirit at least, to the IS F sedan, the new RC F Coupe will take its place as Lexus’ highest-performance car attainable by ordinary mortals. Reports have hinted at output around the 455 horsepower mark, carbon fiber body work, and a suspension tuned to take the fight to the best the Germans have to offer in the midsize sport coupe class. Under the hood, a 5.0-liter V-8, updated from the IS F but sharing its key metrics, is expected. Rear-wheel drive, an 8-speed automatic transmission, and some performance tricks learned with the LFA are also tipped as standard gear.

We’ll know more about the RC F Coupe when it hits the stage in Detroit in a few days’ time, but for now, you can ogle the photos of the curvaceously angular, be-gilled, and rather sexy little coupe. When you’re done, there are also spy photos and spy video of the car undergoing development to ponder.

Should These ‘Top 10 Classic Cars Of Tomorrow’ Really Be On This List?

Should These 'Top 10 Classic Cars Of Tomorrow' Really Be On This List?

Should These 'Top 10 Classic Cars Of Tomorrow' Really Be On This List?
Let’s start this off by saying the folks at Hagerty know classic cars. They know them really well, and that’s why they’re good at pricing them, insuring them, and generally understanding the world of collector cars from minor muscle machines to top-flight European exotics. So when we hear that Hagerty had just put out a list highlighting the new vehicles that it feels should be considered future classics, we expected to be in total agreement. We aren’t.

The rules: They must be new cars and they must start below $100,000. Out of ten on the list… we agree with about three of them. Maybe four.

Let’s go through this list one vehicle at a time, shall we?

    1. Jaguar F-Type R

    2015 Jaguar F-Type R Coupe

No question, an easy pick and we would put it atop our list as well. However, we feel this one gets in by the skin of its teeth based on the rules. Hagerty is going off MSRP, but if you find someone who had actually paid just $99,000 for this crazy kitty we’d be shocked. Your author has driven a V8 S… which wore a sticker price of $104,000.

    2. BMW M5 Sedan

    2014 BMW M5

Not a chance. If the E39 M5 hasn’t made the leap yet, then the latest iteration won’t either. We’re not saying the E39 won’t get there, because it definitely will… but it’s not there yet. If you have your eye on owning one though, you’d better do it now. As for the current car, just wait for it to depreciate… massively.

     3. Chevrolet COPO Camaro:

    2014 Chevrolet COPO Camaro

Instant collectible. It’s produced in small batches, so its limited availability makes it instantly desirable for collectors.

    4.  Maserati Ghibli S:

    Maserati Ghibli

You know how much current collectors love theoriginal Ghibli… wait, they don’t? Ah, got it. Look, the old Ghibli is a pretty cool looking machine, and the new car is, well, actually rather excellent, but it’s no future classic. No one will be pining for a vintage (current) Quattroporte 25 years from now, and no one will be pining for the baby version either.

    5.  Alfa Romeo 4C:

    2014 Alfa Romeo 4C

    Yes, a thousand times yes.

    6.  Chevrolet Corvette Stingray:

    2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Convertible

This will inevitably be a future classic, but that’s practically cheating. It’s going to take some time, of course, but it will eventually get there. Buy one for your great grandkids… because you’re not likely to see it rise in value in your lifetime.

    7.  Nissan 370Z NISMO:

    2014 Nissan 370Z NISMO

Nope. The 240Z? Come to papa. A 1984-1989 Z31 300ZX? Maybe someday. The twin-turbo Z32? There’s a chance, but we’re a ways off. The 350Z? Never. The 370Z is a great leap over the 350Z, and it’s a blast to drive… but we don’t see folks clamoring for them in the future.

    8.  Dodge Challenger Shaker:

    2014 Dodge Challenger R/T Shaker

The future generation will probably opt for the 370Z Nismo before it spends serious coin at an auction block for a modern Challenger. This is just another thing that the old Challenger does better than the new Challenger… bring bucks at the auction block for years to come.

    9.  Jeep Wrangler Rubicon X:

    2014 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon X

The most confusing choice on the list. All those CJ5 and CJ7 Jeeps aren’t forecasting too strongly, so why should the Rubicon X? Think 4.0-liter I6-equipped Jeeps, not 3.6-liter units (even though that engine is WAY better than the last one Chrysler stuck in there).

    10.  Ford Fiesta ST:

2014 Ford Fiesta ST (Euro spec) - First Drive, March 2013

This one… actually could happen. The Fiesta ST could be one of those once in-awhile something-special machines that flies in out of nowhere, impresses everyone who touches it, and leaves us far to quickly. We hope that’s not the case, but it’s highly probable.
