NASCAR’s Tony Stewart Hits And Kills Kevin Ward Jr. During Sprint Car Race (VIDEO)

Warning: The video above contains footage of the impact that killed Kevin Ward Jr. during a sprint car race on Saturday night.

NASCAR star Tony Stewart was involved in a tragic accident that led to the death of up-and-coming driver Kevin Ward Jr. Saturday night during a sprint car race at Canandaigua Motorsports Park in upstate New York. Stewart, a three-time Sprint Cup champion, and a regular in the rowdy dirt events, drove into Ward who had climbed out of his car and onto the track after an accident on a prior lap, killing him.

As the video from YouTube user Law Offices of John M. Phillips shows, Stewart in the #14 car drifts wide coming into turn two, forcing Ward in the #13 car closer to the wall. Ward’s car eventually comes into contact with the wall, causing it to spin and the caution flag to wave. Ward, 20, is then seen leaping out of his car but instead of heading away from the track he steps closer to the action and starts pointing towards Stewart on the next lap.

Stewart’s car appears to fishtail as it passes Ward and eventually runs over the youngster. Ward was rushed to a nearby hospital with “life-threatening injuries” but was pronounced dead later that night.

Police are looking at the accident as an “on-track crash investigation” rather than a criminal matter. Stewart is said to have been “very upset” over what had happened and sat out yesterday’s NASCAR event at Watkins Glen.

Police Video Of Ex-NASCAR Driver Tyler Walker’s High-Speed Chase Released (VIDEO)

Police Video Of Ex-NASCAR Driver Tyler Walker's High-Speed Chase Released (VIDEO)

Even a racing driver isn’t going beat the concerted efforts of the police. That was former NASCAR driver Tyler Walker’s lesson when he was arrested on January 30, 2013, after a high-speed chase over three states. The dash cam video from several officers involved has made it online thanks to a Freedom of Information Act Request to the Utah Highway Patrol, according to Autoweek.

The chase finally stopped when Walker attempted to leave the highway by going the wrong way on an entrance ramp. He attempted to flee on foot but was tackled by police. His charges included evading arrest, driving under the influence, open container, liquor license violation and possession of amphetamines, marijuana and narcotic equipment. He pleaded not guilty and is still awaiting his trial, according to Autoweek.

Walker raced in several NASCAR Nationwide and Camping World Truck Series races from 2003 to 2007, but in May 2007 he was suspended for violating the sport’s substance abuse policy. He also raced extensively in the World of Outlaws dirt track series. The video edits the hour-and-a-half-long chase down to 11 minutes and switches among officers several times. Scroll down to watch it, but warning: There’s some explicit language.

The King has responded, and he’s ready to race.

Richard Petty said on Friday that he will accept Tony Stewart’s challenge to race Danica Patrick.

After Petty made some remarks about Patrick, alluding to a lack of driving talent, Stewart levied the challenge. And on Friday, Petty said he was game.

“I’m 76 years old, OK?” Petty said on the Fox New Channel’s Fox and Friends. “It’s been 25 years since I’ve been in a race car. But I’ll take that challenge.”

Chevy SS Pace Car Goes Up In Flames At NASCAR Sprint Unlimited (VIDEO)

    Chevrolet-SS-pace-car-fire

The 2014 Chevrolet SS pace car in Saturday night’s NASCAR Sprint Unlimited exhibition race at Daytona got itself into trouble when a fire started inside its trunk. As the Fox Sports video above shows, smoke from the fire quickly engulfed the cabin and the driver, former NASCAR driver Brett Bodine, was lucky to get the car off the track and out of harm’s way with causing an accident.

Chevrolet followed up with a statement on Sunday morning explaining that purpose-built electrical equipment for the pace car’s functions was to blame and not any issue with the SS sports sedan.

“The pace car experienced a fire in the trunk area, which contains a purpose-built auxiliary electrical kit to operate the numerous caution lights during the race,” the statement read. “The pace car driver and passenger safely exited the vehicle. An assessment is underway.”

The fire happened before the start of the final segment of the Sprint Unlimited race, but organizers had another pace car on hand so the race could continue unabated. The night saw plenty of action with a crash on lap 35, instigated by two-time Daytona 500 winner Matt Kenseth, taking out seven cars. The eventual winner was Joe Gibbs Racing star Denny Hamlin.

Incidentally, this is the third strange mishap at the Daytona International Speedway in recent years. In 2012, Juan Pablo Montoya crashed into a jet dryer during the Daytona 500 race, causing a huge fireball, and in 2010 the Daytona 500 was delayed when organizers had to repair potholes in the track. The 2014 Daytona 500 takes place this Sunday, February 23.
