A winter storm created a traffic mess in North Carolina on Wednesday, leading some drivers to abandon their cars — which has made the situation even worse. Now the state’s Department of Transportation is working to get those vehicles out of the way so it can properly clear and salt roads.
The plan for doing that in Raleigh is pretty simple, according to a release from the DOT: State troopers, National Guard Soldiers, other law enforcement officers, and Incident Management Assistance Patrol (IMAP) crews are checking the abandoned cars to make sure there’s no one inside.
For now, DOT and IMAP crews are moving only cars that are blocking traffic and creating a safety hazard. Where possible, they’re just pushing them onto the shoulder. In other cases, they’re working with towing companies to get them to a safe location.
The State Highway Patrol had 139 vehicles towed between midnight and 8:30 a.m., and patrolled roads overnight to check for those in need of assistance, according to the DOT.
In a press conference, North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory advised drivers to leave their cars where they are for now, and be extremely careful if they do decide to retrieve them, as the storm is ongoing. Drivers who abandoned their vehicles outside Raleigh were told to contact the State Highway Patrol.

The Winter Olympics already involves people competing on vehicles constructed by car companies. Why not go whole hog and start racing cars?
I propose Finnish Crosskart racing. You have a set car that’s fast (o-60 in 3.5 seconds) not prohibitively expensive (it runs a bike engine) and it follows a strict formula, like with bobsleds.
The focus would be on driver skill, and on a tight snow course, it would look awesome.
What sport, whether it’s real or one you just thought up, belongs in the Winter Olympics.

Ah, to be young and dumb. If there’s one thing we’ve learned through our years on this earth, it’s that situations that involve towing someone behind a vehicle are usually very, very bad ideas.
Take these Ohio yokels, for example. With plenty of flooded fields to play with, they hitched a line to the back of a pickup truck, put a guy on a wakeboard, and towed him along. This was done in December, when the temperature was a frosty 47 degrees, according to the video’s description. Perhaps the young men involved in this video are distant relatives of these Russians.

The weather conditions are causing havoc on U.S roads with the big freeze, but the UK are getting it pretty bad too as this motorcyclists finds out while driving on a UK highway.
Floods have been hitting England pretty hard causing the roads to turn into lakes, and lakes you can’t quite see.
This is terrifying…
