New burnout world record set at Australia’s Summernats festival of horsepower.
Australia is known for a couple of things – being populated by convicts, housing many dangerous animals, and having a strong hatred for tyres. Burnouts are in the Australian blood.
The Aussies already held the world record for the most cars simultaneously doing burnouts, but on new year’s day 2015 they broke the pre-existing record as 103 cars turned rubber into smoke in the capital of Australia.
French daredevil driver, skier, and rally racer Guerlain Chicherit’s Guinness World Record jump attempt was promoted all around the world last week. Chicherit was aiming to surpass Tanner Foust’s 332-foot record with a 360-foot jump in a modified MINI Countryman rally car.
The jump, which took place this past Sunday, March 16, started well enough, with plenty of distance to clear the enormous gap. But the landing didn’t go so smoothly.
Toward the end of Chicherit’s flight, the MINI nosed down sharply, landing almost perpendicular to the ramp and cartwheeling down to a stop, resting on its side.
The wreck looks scary–and almost certainly was from Chicherit’s perspective–but fortunately he emerged from the MINI under his own power and has since been cleared by a precautionary MRI. He’s fine, apart from a few minor injuries.
The Hennessey Venom hit 270.49mph at the Kennedy Space Center making it the highest speed ever recorded by a production car.
The 1,244bhp Venom clocked its record-breaking figure beating the the Bugatti Veyron SS to the post as the fastest car in the world.
The stats from this world record will blow you away! The Venom is powered by a 7.0-litre twin-turbo GM based V8, which accelerated from 20mph to 120mph in just 7.71 seconds and to make that even more impressive it pulled a maximum 1.2g of longitudinal acceleration as it went. That’s freaking insane!
The Bloodhound SSC is the offspring of the Thrust SSC that set the world land speed record in 1997, RAF pilot Andy Green blasting across the desert at 793 miles per hour. Whereas Thrust SSC was about going supersonic, though, Bloodhound SSC is about encouraging kids to get into science – it’s an education project whose main purpose is to entice students to be the next generation of scientists, and it does that by taking kids on the journey of building a land-based vehicle that aims to go 1,000 mph.
And what a vehicle it is, called a mix between a “fast fighter jet, a Formula One car, a spaceship and a boat” by one of its engineers.
A few of the intriguing facts: it uses a 600-horsepower race car engine just to turn a pump that sends peroxide to the rocket engine at 1,200 psi; it generates 20 tons of thrust between that rocket and the Eurofighter Typhoon EJ200 engine, needed to overcome the 15 tons of drag it will encounter assuming it gets to 1,050 mph; it takes 15 seconds to get to 100 mph, but another ten seconds – ideally – to reach 1,000 mph.
…over a standing mile. This badass 1805 bhp Lamborghini Gallardo Nera just made it in the record books. It is officially the fastest car in the world over a standing mile after it crossed the line after 20.845sec at 254mph at the Unlim 500+ drag racing event in Russia. Incredible scenes!
